Flicky, adopted from an animal rescue in Bulgaria
Animal welfare

Adopt, don’t shop

Shelters and rescues care for many dogs looking for a new home, including pedigree dogs. Flicky herself was adopted from an animal rescue in Bulgaria. Before you contact a breeder, take a look at the shelter near you.

  • Their personality is often already known, so you can see if you are a good match.
  • Shelter dogs are often vaccinated, chipped and neutered before they move in.
  • You give a dog a second chance and make room in the shelter for the next one.

Tip: tell the shelter team which traits from your result matter most to you.

How we find your match

There is no fixed formula, but a matching principle. For each of the 35 breeds we collected key traits from recognised sources such as the VDH, FCI breed standards and veterinary portals.

  1. Rule out

Some answers are hard criteria. If this is your first dog and you live in a flat, breeds that need experienced owners and lots of space drop out right away.

  2. Weigh up

All remaining breeds are compared with your answers on exercise, size, grooming, budget and the optional bonus questions.

  3. Rank

The percentage shows how close a breed comes to your profile. 100 % means it fits every question you answered.

Why some breeds are missing

We deliberately left out 7 breeds whose breeding standards cause serious health problems. They are considered torture breeding under the German Animal Welfare Dog Ordinance and the Qualzucht database (QUEN).

For Boxer, St. Bernard, Dachshund and German Shepherd there is a debate about certain breeding traits, often only in some lines. They stay in the quiz, and your result points out the specifics.

Sources: Qualzucht database (QUEN), § 11b German Animal Welfare Act, FCI breed standards.

  • PugExtremely short skull, high risk of breathing problems (BOAS).

  • ChihuahuaSkull-brain mismatch, open fontanelle.
  • Basset HoundExtremely short legs and a long back, high risk of disc disease.
  • Shar PeiExtreme skin folds, prone to chronic inflammation.
  • Shih TzuExtremely short skull, chronic breathing and eye problems.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the result?

The quiz gives you a well-founded orientation, not a guarantee. Every dog is an individual, and character varies a lot even within a breed.

What does the percentage mean?

It shows how close a breed comes to your profile. 100 % means it matches every question you answered.

Can I share my result?

Yes. Your answers are stored in the link, so you can save it or send it to someone. No personal data is transmitted.

Why are Pugs, French Bulldogs and Chihuahuas missing?

Their breeding standards favour serious health problems, which is why they are considered torture breeding. We don’t want to recommend them.

Does the quiz replace advice from a breeder or shelter?

No. Use your result as a starting point and talk to the people who know the individual dog.

Is the quiz free?

Yes, completely free and without sign-up.
