Frequently asked questions

At what temperature should I rug my horse?

There is no fixed limit. Coat, age, health, wind, wet and housing matter more than the number on the thermometer. If in doubt, ask your vet.

How many grams of fill does a winter rug need?

Roughly 0 g for rain and wind, 50 to 100 g for the transition, 150 to 250 g for medium cold and 300 g or more as a heavy rug. Clipped horses usually need more.

Must a horse in a field shelter wear a rug?

Not automatically. Healthy, unclipped horses with shelter and winter coat often manage without. Older, thin or sick horses or horses without shelter may benefit from a turnout rug.

How do I measure the rug size?

Stand your horse square and measure with a tape along the back from the withers to the tail. Then compare with the size chart of the brand, sizes vary.

How do I know the rug is too warm?

Slip your hand under the rug between withers and shoulder. If it is damp or clearly warm there, the rug is too thick.
