- Subscription with a permanent 10 percent off, no minimum term
- Free shipping from 60 euros
- Meat content usually 40 to 50 percent, depending on the recipe
Do you know that feeling when you stand in front of ten almost identical bags of dry food in the supermarket and wonder whether there is really fresh meat inside or just a bit of marketing? Pets Deli promises exactly this freshness, with BARF, wet food and dry food from its own production in Berlin.
We take a look at whether the promise lives up to what the name suggests.
What is Pets Deli, and how did the brand come about?
Pets Deli was founded in Berlin in 2014 by David Spanier and Kevin F. Glynn, originally as Germany's first restaurant for dogs and cats in the Grunewald district. The idea came to one of the founders because his own dog struggled with food intolerances and he could not find a suitable alternative in the shops.
The fresh food subscription of those days has since grown into a premium brand with a wide range, produced in Berlin, with raw materials from certified EU producers and recipes developed together with vets and nutrition experts.
Range: BARF, wet food and more
The range now covers far more than the original fresh food concept, and everything is also available for cats.
Free from grain and sugar, according to Pets Deli made 100 percent from food grade ingredients, with a high meat content as the central selling point.
Recipes with chicken, beef or veal, for example, with a meat content that varies by variety.
For dogs where sustainability or a gentle protein source is the priority.
Snacks and dietary supplements for dogs and cats.
What independent tests say
In independent tests of 33 varieties in total, including 14 dry and 19 wet foods, the transparent quantity information was the main highlight. When it comes to the pure meat content, however, testers still see room for improvement. In a popular wet food variety with turkey, the meat content dropped from 66 to 50 percent when the recipe was revised, which pushed the test rating down from 5 to 4.5 stars.
User reports are mostly positive, with many owners reporting good tolerance and high acceptance, even in small dogs. The tests are more critical about the details of the declaration: herbs are often not listed individually, and the exact muscle meat content could be clearer and in some cases higher. Overall, though, the picture remains clearly more positive than negative, especially compared with classic supermarket food.
Prices, shipping and frozen delivery
BARF products start at around 35.99 euros, the exact price depends on variety and pack size. Shipping within Germany costs 4.90 euros and is free from an order value of 60 euros. For frozen shipping, Pets Deli uses insulation made from recycled PET bottles so that the cold chain holds without using unnecessary amounts of new plastic.
Subscription, discount code and other ways to save
Besides single purchases, Pets Deli offers a subscription with a permanent 10 percent discount on every delivery, without any minimum term. You can pause or end it yourself at any time. According to the shop, there are also trial packs for dogs and cats, a newsletter discount and a refer a friend offer.
