The short answer

Fressnapf is Europe’s largest omnichannel retailer for pet supplies. Instead of one big code, Fressnapf relies on several permanent ways to save: new customer and newsletter discount, the loyalty programme Fressnapf Friends and Little Friends for puppies and kittens.

  • More than 900 stores in Germany, more than 2,800 across Europe
  • Shipping 2.99 euros, free from €49, Click & Collect always free
  • Fressnapf Friends is free and can be cancelled at any time
  • There are separate codes for Austria

Do you know the moment when your dog walks into a Fressnapf store and freezes for two minutes because the sheer number of smells is overwhelming? Fressnapf is by far the biggest name in pet supplies in the German speaking countries.

Exactly this size raises a fair question: is a discount code at the market leader worth it at all, or do you end up saving more at specialist shops? We take an honest look.

What is Fressnapf, and how big is the market leader?

Fressnapf was founded in 1990 by Torsten Toeller in Erkelenz, inspired by American specialist store concepts, and grew rapidly through a franchise system from 1992. Today, the German Fressnapf Holding SE alone runs more than 900 stores. The Austrian Fressnapf Handels GmbH joined in 1997 and now has more than 135 locations.

Under the joint umbrella Fressnapf | Maxi Zoo, the group is represented across Europe with more than 2,800 stores in 15 countries, making it by far the largest omnichannel specialist retailer for pet supplies in Europe.

Own brands at a glance

Alongside well-known third party brands, Fressnapf has built up 16 own brands over the years. These include SELECT GOLD and PREMIERE in the premium segment, REAL NATURE with near natural recipes, AniOne for accessories such as transport boxes and leads, MultiFit as the basic range as well as PetBalance and PetBalance Medica for special dietary needs. These own brands also regularly appear in discount promotions, for example with limited time extra discounts on individual varieties.

How to save at Fressnapf in the long run

Fressnapf relies less on a single big discount code than on several ways to save side by side.

FIRST ORDERNew customer and newsletter discount

A discount on your first order, plus a welcome discount via the newsletter. Both usually cannot be applied to the same order, but one after the other.

FREEFressnapf Friends

Collect paws with every purchase and get money back, plus exclusive coupons and a birthday present for you and your pet. Can be cancelled at any time.

UNDER 12 MONTHSLittle Friends

Accompanies you through the first year of your puppy or kitten, with exclusive coupons and tips on feeding and training.

You can find the current code for Germany on our Fressnapf coupon page and here:

Shipping, delivery and Click & Collect

Standard shipping costs 2.99 euros and is free from an order value of €49, and delivery usually takes 1 to 3 working days. For very heavy orders over 31 kilos, there is a one-off additional shipping fee of 2.99 euros, because the shipment is then split into several parcels.

If you choose Click & Collect instead and pick up your order in the store, there are no shipping costs at all, and you get personal advice on top.

Fressnapf in Austria: what is different?

In Austria, a lot runs in parallel to Germany: a discount for new customers, a welcome discount via the newsletter as well as Fressnapf Friends and Little Friends, here according to the shop even with up to 15 percent off for the club membership. Via our Fressnapf Austria coupon page you get the current Austrian codes, which can differ from the German promotions.

Fressnapf or a specialist shop?

Fressnapf plays to its strengths when you need several animal species or a wide range in one place, plus the option to order online and still get advice in store.

If, on the other hand, you are specifically looking for a single protein recipe for a sensitive dog, you are more likely to find it via our Escapure coupon page. For fresh BARF (raw) food, it is worth taking a look at haustierkost.de or Pets Deli, and for individually calculated dry food on subscription at Just Russel.

Both approaches have their place: Fressnapf scores with convenience and a wide range, specialist shops often with deeper expertise on a single need. Our pet food calculator works out how much food your pet needs. And if you take your dog into the store, plan a few extra minutes: with so many metres of shelves full of new smells, even the most determined four-legged friend quickly strays from the shopping list.

The short answer

WOW Pet can be worth it if you are looking for a wide range for dogs and cats, a high meat content and good value for money. But read the declaration carefully, not every variety name keeps its promise.

  • Wet food with up to around 71 % meat content
  • 68 out of 100 points in a brand comparison, wet food much stronger than dry food
  • Subscription with a permanent 18 % discount
  • Made by PetCo GmbH from Vienna

Have you ever sat in front of your screen and lost track between Adult, Junior, Pur and a dozen varieties, wondering which WOW food actually suits your dog or cat? A cat that pointedly ignores the food bowl, or a dog loudly demanding a say, is probably familiar to every pet owner. Both have a surprisingly clear opinion on taste, just sadly none on the declaration.

This overview helps you decide whether WOW Pet really saves you time and money or rather raises extra questions.

71 %Meat content (WOW Adult beef)
68 out of 100Points in a brand comparison

Range for dogs and cats

WOW Pet is made by PetCo GmbH from Vienna, which also runs the brand Dog’s Love. The range for dogs and cats includes wet and dry food, snacks, supplements and special lines based on age, activity and tolerance.

WET FOODCans and trays

High meat content, protein sources like beef, turkey or fish, often with vegetables instead of grain.

DRY FOODKibble by age

Size and texture suited to puppies, adults and seniors. Check crude protein, fat and additives.

SNACKSChews and treats

From beef scalp to grain free rewards, soft training snacks for puppies.

SUPPLEMENTSOils and preparations

Omega 3 oils, joint supplements and other nutritional additives.

Most dogs treat beef scalp roughly like a world cup trophy, guarded for hours and shared only reluctantly. Still, use snacks sparingly, add the calories to the daily requirement and read the ingredients carefully if your dog has allergies.

WOW Adult and special lines

WOW Adult is positioned as an everyday food, for example the beef with carrot and zucchini variety, which combines a high meat content with vegetables. On top of that there are grain free varieties, a “Pur” line with only one type of meat for sensitive animals, a Junior line for puppies between 2 and 12 months with eggshell powder as a natural calcium source, and cat food without carbohydrates.

There is something poetic about eggshells of all things building strong bones while the puppy is only just learning not to trip over its own paws. If your dog has special needs regarding weight, allergies or activity, it is worth talking to your vet about the right line.

Ingredients and declaration in detail

WOW relies on a high meat content and grain free recipes, with a few limitations in the naming that you should know before you buy a specific variety on purpose.

Meat content and variety names

Tested WOW wet food varieties such as WOW Adult with beef, carrot and zucchini reach a meat content of around 71 percent, a really strong value. However, variety names do not always reflect the dominant ingredient.

How to read the declaration

Grain free: benefits and limits

Many WOW varieties are grain free and use vegetables, potatoes or sweet potatoes as a carbohydrate source. For dogs with grain sensitivity this can mean fewer digestive problems.

But grain free does not automatically mean better for every dog, some tolerate carbohydrate rich energy sources just as well or even need them. Check for each variety which ingredients supply the carbohydrates.

Experiences and test results

In a comprehensive brand comparison, WOW scored 68 out of 100 points and ranked 49th out of 180 tested brands. Notably, the wet food performed much better with an average of 86 points than the dry food with only 35 points. So if you go with WOW, lean towards the wet food. You can find the full results in the WOW dog food test by Hundeo.

Overall, customers praise the quality of the ingredients and the fast delivery. Criticism occasionally concerns smell, texture and the sometimes unclear quantities given for organ meats.

Prices, subscription and discount code

WOW is mid range in price and offers good value for money, especially for wet food with a high meat content. Always compare the price per kilogram instead of just the pack price, can sizes and bag formats differ a lot.

With the same meat content, WOW can be cheaper than premium brands but more expensive than discounters. If you depend on individual organ meats or strict single protein recipes, costs rise quickly.

With the in house subscription you get a permanent 18 percent discount as long as the subscription runs. If you prefer to order once, you will find the current codes on our WOW Pet coupon page:

Who is WOW Pet right for?

WOW suits owners looking for grain free, meat focused food who do not have the highest premium budget. The range covers wet and dry food as well as snacks, handy if you want to order the complete diet in one place. For accessories such as bowls or toys you will need another shop, though.

If your dog has allergies, take a look at the “Pur” line. The Junior line suits puppies, the matching age lines suit seniors. If regional raw materials matter to you, the Austrian origin speaks for WOW.

Your dog will not care much about the postcode of its food, as long as the bowl is filled on time.

How does WOW Pet compare?

ZooRoyal is an established online and store based retailer for pet supplies and part of the REWE Group, with more than 10,000 items for dogs, cats, small animals, birds and aquatics. Customers especially praise the fast delivery and the wide range.

  • Ideal for households with several animal species
  • Own brands produced according to the IFS Food standard
  • Free shipping in Austria from €49
  • Criticism: occasional trouble with the parcel service

Do you know the moment when a parcel arrives and suddenly the whole house is in uproar, because several animals at once want to know what is inside? ZooRoyal is made exactly for such multi pet households: a large online shop that brings together pretty much everything under one roof, from dog food to aquarium accessories.

We take an honest look at the range, prices and experiences of Austrian customers.

What is ZooRoyal, and who is behind it?

ZooRoyal was founded in 2008 and originally grew out of the company Aquatop, which specialised in aquatics. Based in Cologne, ZooRoyal has been part of the REWE Group since 2014, so it is not a small niche shop but an offshoot of one of the largest retail groups in Germany and Austria.

Online, the range includes more than 10,000 items, and in the now several physical specialist stores there are even more than 15,000. You can also find products from the ZooRoyal own brands at REWE, PENNY, toom and, in Austria, at BILLA and BIPA. So ZooRoyal is part of your everyday life more often than you might think.

The range at a glance

ZooRoyal’s strength clearly lies in its breadth rather than in a single specialisation. It covers dogs, cats, small animals, birds and aquatics/ponds, plus terrarium accessories for reptile owners. Whether you need food, toys, accessories or animal medicine, you will usually find it without having to order from different shops for different animals.

The own brands

Alongside well-known third party brands, ZooRoyal has developed its own brands together with vets. All of them are produced according to the IFS Food standard, a recognised quality standard for food production, and according to the provider offer particularly good value for money.

Experiences and points of criticism

On review platforms, ZooRoyal already has several thousand customer reviews in Austria, and in Germany there are even well over 19,000. Customers consistently praise the fast, reliable delivery, the wide and high quality range and a friendly, accommodating customer service.

Some customers are more critical of the parcel service used: DPD in particular is occasionally criticised for problematic drop off spots for heavy parcels, and now and then delicate items such as cans or bowls arrive damaged. Overall, though, the picture is positive, especially in terms of value for money.

Discount code and ways to save

On our ZooRoyal AT coupon page you will find, among other things, a new customer discount on your first purchase. On top of that, there are regularly changing promotions, for example discounts from a minimum order value or on selected brands. The current codes:

Who is ZooRoyal worth it for?

ZooRoyal is a particularly good fit for households with several animal species that do not like searching a different shop for every animal, and for everyone who values the security of an established group in the background.

If, on the other hand, you are specifically looking for specialised BARF (raw) food, you will find it on our Haustierkost coupon page or our Pets Deli coupon page, and for single protein dry food it is worth taking a look at our Escapure coupon page. Our pet food calculator works out how much food your pet needs.

And if several animal species live under one roof at your place, the arrival of a ZooRoyal parcel will probably become a little family event: the dog sniffs the box excitedly, while the cat first waits on the windowsill to see whether the whole thing is worth it at all.

Yes, ZooRoyal is originally a German shop based in Cologne and also has specialist stores in Germany. The online shop zooroyal.at is aimed at customers in Austria, with its own conditions.

The short answer

For most dogs there is no single “best” food. The right choice depends on your dog’s age, health and preferences, and dry food, wet food and BARF each have clear pros and cons.

  • Dry food: convenient, long shelf life, usually cheaper
  • Wet food: lots of moisture, good for picky dogs and dogs that drink too little
  • BARF: full control, but needs planning and hygiene
  • Always switch food gradually over 7 to 10 days

Have you ever stood in front of the food bowl thinking: dry food, wet food or BARF after all? What really makes my dog happy? Me too. And sometimes it feels like all that effort is going to the dogs. Literally.

Here you’ll find out when dry food is convenient, when wet food has advantages and for whom BARF can be a real option. I’ll also show you simple criteria for making the best decision. For serious health questions, please always talk to your vet.

60 to 84 %moisture in wet food
7 to 10 daysrecommended transition time
80/10/10BARF rule of thumb: meat, organs, bones

What does your dog really need?

Your dog needs protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals in the right amounts. Protein supplies amino acids for muscles and the immune system, and animal protein usually has a higher biological value. Fats provide energy and help absorb vitamins A, D, E and K, while omega-3 fatty acids support skin and joints. Carbohydrates provide quick energy, and fibre supports gut health.

Energy needs depend on weight, age, breed and activity: a calm senior needs far less than a young sporty dog. Use the energy information on the pack as a guide and watch your dog’s body condition: ribs you can feel but not see.

Complete feeds cover all of your dog’s needs if you follow the feeding guidelines. Make sure they meet FEDIAF, AAFCO or national standards, because cheap doesn’t automatically mean complete. With BARF or home-cooked food, you need a nutrition plan or supplements.

Dry food: convenient and affordable

Dry food is convenient, keeps for a long time and is usually cheaper than wet food or BARF. It is made from meat meal or fresh meat, grains or grain substitutes, fats, vitamins and minerals. A named meat source should come first, not “animal by-products”. Vitamin E (tocopherols) is considered a safe preservative, while some sensitive dogs tolerate certain chemical preservatives less well. Grain is not bad in itself, but it can trigger allergies.

Dry food needs more fluid in the stomach and several hours to break down. If your dog often has gas, soft stools or is always hungry, a more digestible recipe is worth trying. Large kibble suits large breeds better, small kibble suits puppies and small dogs. Weigh the food, because high-calorie kibble needs smaller portions.

By the way, regular dry food only cleans teeth a little. Special dental food, tooth brushing, chews and yearly check-ups remain important. My sensitive dog Flicky, for example, tolerates these dry foods well:

Wet food: who it suits best

Wet food usually contains 60 to 84 percent water. This increases fluid intake without extra drinking, which is important for older dogs or dogs that drink too little and for urinary tract problems, and it can help prevent constipation. Many dogs like the smell and soft texture, and after surgery or with dental problems it is easier to eat.

Wet food has less energy per gram, so you feed larger amounts. That fills your dog up and helps with weight. You need to refrigerate opened portions and use them quickly, and single portions reduce spoilage. Look for complete feeds and menus without unnecessary additives. Flicky tolerates these wet foods well:

BARF and raw feeding

BARF stands for “Biologisch Artgerechtes Rohes Futter” in German (biologically appropriate raw food), in English “bones and raw food”. You combine raw muscle meat, organs, raw bones, vegetables and fruit, modelled on natural prey. The mix depends on age, activity and health.

80 %Muscle meat

Protein and energy as the base.

10 %Organs

Liver and kidney provide vitamin A, D, B complex and iron, but in measured amounts.

10 %Raw bones

Calcium and phosphorus. Never cooked bones, they splinter. Chop them up for small dogs.

PLUSVegetables and fruit

Carrot, pumpkin, apple without the core and leafy greens as a source of fibre and vitamins.

The rule of thumb is a starting point you can adjust. Only add supplements such as omega-3 oil, vitamin E or minerals when needed, and regular blood tests beat gut feeling. Introduce new ingredients one at a time, watch stools, coat and energy, and have blood values checked at least once a year.

If you want to feed raw without butchering yourself, these providers are a good choice: Nutriment delivers ready-portioned frozen BARF and fresh menus with a balanced ratio of meat, organs and bones. Haustierkost specialises in frozen meat and ready-made BARF menus. Butternut Box delivers freshly cooked, individually tailored food. You can find the current offers in our shop overview.

Mixed feeding and switching food

Mixed feeding combines the advantages of several types of food, for example 50 g of dry food in the morning and 200 g of wet food in the evening, adjusted to weight and activity. Add up the calories of all components and watch stools, appetite and energy. Clean water must always be available.

Complete menus are ready-made wet food portions with all nutrients, while ready-made BARF comes portioned as a raw or gently processed product. Check the label, hygiene standards and origin of the ingredients. For sensitive dogs, menus with few protein sources are a good fit. If you’d rather stick with dry food, Just Russel is convenient: individual dry food tailored to breed, age and weight and delivered on subscription, so you skip the calculations.

  1. 1Start slowlyOn day one, use about 25 % new food, then increase to 100 % over 7 to 14 days.
  2. 2Change one thingOnly switch the protein source, food type or brand, never everything at once.
  3. 3ObserveNote any vomiting, gas or changes in stools.
  4. 4Hygiene with BARFSeparate boards, wash your hands, store safely.
  5. 5Involve your vetFor older dogs or dogs with existing conditions, discuss the switch beforehand.

What suits your dog?

Puppies need calorie and nutrient rich food with extra calcium and DHA for brain and bones, so look for the label “for puppies”. Seniors often need fewer calories, easily digestible protein and joint supplements such as glucosamine, and wet food helps if they drink little or chew poorly. Dogs with allergies often need an elimination diet with single protein food or hydrolysed proteins, more on this in our allergy guide.

A shiny coat usually shows that the fatty acid balance is right. Wet food is digested faster than dry food, and probiotics can stabilise the gut flora. BARF with raw meat and bones can reduce tartar, but it carries risks. If your vet recommends a special diet, for example for kidney, liver or skin problems, follow it closely and ask about duration and check-up appointments.

Frequently asked questions

Which type of feeding suits my dog?

That depends on age, activity, allergies and health, but also on how much time and money you want to invest. BARF needs more planning, wet and dry food are easier for everyday life. If your dog is ill, ask your vet.

How do I recognise high-quality food?

By a clear ingredient list with a real meat source in first place, without lots of “animal by-products” or fillers. Quality seals, lab tests and disclosed analyses are good signs.

What are the pros and cons of the different types of food?

Dry food is convenient and affordable, but contains less moisture. Wet food is moist and tasty, but more expensive and spoils quickly. BARF gives you control, but takes effort and carries hygiene risks.

How do I switch gently to a different type of feeding?

Over 7 to 10 days, or 2 to 3 weeks for sensitive dogs, with a little more new food every day. Watch appetite, stools and energy. If there is severe diarrhoea or vomiting, stop and ask your vet.

Is raw feeding suitable for every dog?

No. Caution is needed with puppies, immunocompromised animals, seniors and households with small children. Risks include germs such as salmonella, unbalanced nutrients and bone injuries.

How much should my dog eat per day?

Start with the manufacturer’s feeding table and adjust it to body condition and activity. Weigh the food and check the weight regularly. If you’re unsure, a nutrition consultation or your vet can help.

The short answer

Fred & Felia relies on human grade ingredients and a flexible subscription without a minimum term. Independent tests rate the brand solid to good, with the wet food ahead of the dry food.

  • Fred for dogs, Felia for cats
  • Wet food with an average meat content of around 41 %
  • VIP option with a permanent 25 % discount
  • Almost only available in its own online shop

Do you know the feeling when you spend hours in the kitchen cooking something healthy for your dog or cat, and in the end both of them only sniff sceptically at the bowl? Fred & Felia promises exactly the opposite: ready made food that is meant to taste as if you had cooked it yourself, just without oven gloves and a greasy kitchen. Sounds good, but does the food keep its promise?

Fred takes care of dogs, Felia of cats, and both share the same aim: human grade ingredients, gently prepared, with the goal of tasting “better than home cooked”. We take a look at recipes, declaration, experiences and the subscription.

around 41 %meat content in the wet food (average)
25 %permanent discount with the VIP option
0 monthsminimum term of the subscription

What is Fred & Felia?

Fred & Felia advertises its recipes with the aim of preparing the food from human grade ingredients, meaning ingredients that are also approved for people. The brand deliberately sets itself apart from classic industrial food and positions itself closer to home cooked meals, just ready portioned and calculated to be balanced.

DOGFred

Dry food, Frischmenü (fresh menu, wet food) and snacks. Lines: Klassiker (classic), Junior for puppies, Senior and a VET line with special recipes.

CATFelia

According to the brand, developed with a specialist vet for animal nutrition. Single, clearly named protein sources such as chicken with salmon, beef, turkey or horse, all grain free.

Your tomcat probably could not care less about these details, as long as the right smell comes out of the can. But this clarity about varieties helps you when you are looking for a specific protein source.

Recipes and ingredients in detail

Whether the promise “better than home cooked” holds up depends above all on the composition.

Protein sources and meat content

At Fred, the choice ranges from chicken and beef to turkey and rarer game varieties such as deer, mouflon, horse or wild boar. Independent food tests found an average meat content of around 41 percent for the wet food, while the average for the dry food is about 36 percent.

One tested Frischmenü variety with chicken reached 68 percent meat content and only just missed the 70 percent mark. A dry food with 50 percent chicken even did very well on nutritional values.

Grain free and VET lines

Grain free recipes replace wheat and maize with other carbohydrate sources and are standard in several lines at Fred and Felia. For dogs with special needs, there are VET recipes, for example for overweight (Adipositas), food intolerance (Hypoallergen) or sensitive digestion (Intestinal).

Declaration and transparency

In independent tests, the declaration of the wet food scored better than that of the dry food, around 70 points for the Frischmenüs compared to about 55 for the dry food. So overall, the wet food line is declared more transparently. Still, check the percentages in the ingredient list yourself for every variety.

Experiences with dogs and cats

Ingredient list or not, in the end the bowl decides.

Experiences with dogs

Owners often report a better coat and more stable digestion after the switch, and many dogs take to the Frischmenüs well to very well. Some feedback is more critical about the price for large dogs and about the fact that Fred & Felia is essentially only available in its own online shop. As always, give your dog seven to ten days for the switch.

Experiences with cats

With Felia, cats in tests showed high acceptance of all three tested varieties, with a slight preference for turkey. Even the beef variety went down surprisingly well with some picky cats.

However, some critics point out that the fibre content of some recipes is rather high for a cat as a pure carnivore. Especially with sensitive cats, watch closely how digestion and stool react to the switch. For serious health questions, please always talk to your vet.

What independent tests say overall

Overall, Fred & Felia does solidly to well, with the wet food clearly ahead in meat content and declaration. Do not rely on a single test, but combine the results with your own observations.

Fred & Felia is a good fit for owners who value traceable ingredients and are willing to pay a little more for fresh quality than for standard supermarket food. Especially with picky eaters or animals with a slightly sensitive stomach, the switch can make a noticeable difference.

If you have a very large dog or prefer to buy in a store, plan the costs and the online only availability realistically beforehand. If you are looking specifically for a single protein source, it is worth comparing with our Tales & Tails review, which focuses more on single protein.

Frequently asked questions

What is Fred & Felia?

A brand of dog and cat food that gently prepares human grade ingredients and thus positions itself closer to home cooked meals. Fred is the dog line, Felia the cat line.

What is the difference between Frischmenü and dry food?

The Frischmenü (wet food) has more meat on average and a more transparent declaration. Dry food, on the other hand, is usually cheaper per kilo and keeps longer.

How much does Fred & Felia cost, and how do I save?

Wet food costs about 8 to 10 euros per kilo, dry food around 6.60 to 8 euros, premium recipes considerably more. New customers save 30 % with the code AFWEYTMG, and for heavy users the VIP option with 25 percent is worth it.

Can I pause or cancel the subscription?

Yes, the subscription has no minimum term and can be paused, and amount and interval can be adjusted at any time. To cancel, check your customer account or ask support.

Is the food suitable for food intolerances?

For dogs, there is a VET line with a hypoallergenic recipe. For sensitive cats, also pay attention to the fibre content. For serious health questions, please talk to your vet.

How does Fred & Felia do in tests?

The wet food in particular is rated solid to good, with around 41 percent meat on average and a transparent declaration. The dry food is a little behind, but individual varieties do very well.

The short answer

vetevo offers worm, allergy, gut flora, DNA and urine tests for dogs, cats and horses, analysed in its own laboratory in Teltow, Brandenburg. The worm test and urine test strips are considered established screening methods, while independent studies show clear limits for the allergy test.

  • Worm test: stool samples over three days, up to 9 worm species
  • Urine test for cats: 10 parameters in about one minute
  • Allergy test via saliva and hair sample only as a rough indication
  • None of this replaces a visit to the vet

Do you know the feeling when your dog or cat keeps scratching or struggles with their stomach, and you wish you could simply look up what is behind it? vetevo promises exactly that: do it yourself health tests, sent in from home.

We take an honest look at what the individual tests can do and where their limits are. Important up front: nothing here replaces a visit to your vet.

What is vetevo?

vetevo runs its own laboratory in Teltow, Brandenburg and, according to its own information, has already carried out more than 400,000 tests. The company describes itself as number 1 in Europe in this field.

The range includes worm tests in several levels (Basic, Pro, Plus), an allergy test, a gut flora test, a DNA breed test and a urine test for cats, plus functional snacks. The free vetevo app brings together results, a food check and a symptom tracker in one place.

ESTABLISHEDWorm test

Laboratory analysis of stool samples, an established method in veterinary medicine.

ESTABLISHEDCat urine test

Test strips like those vet practices also use for screening.

CONTROVERSIALAllergy test

Saliva and hair sample, independent studies see clear limits.

ADDITIONALDNA and gut flora

Breed composition in dogs and composition of the gut bacteria.

Worm test: an established method you send in

For the worm test, you collect stool samples from your animal over three days and send them to the vetevo laboratory. There they are tested for up to 9 worm species, including lungworms and giardia. You receive the result digitally via the app and email.

This kind of laboratory analysis of stool samples is an established method in veterinary medicine and much less controversial than other tests in this article. Even so, the worm test does not replace a check by your vet if symptoms persist.

Allergy test: what the saliva and hair sample can show

For the allergy test, you send in a saliva sample and a hair sample. Depending on the level you choose, up to 378 possible triggers from the areas of food, grasses, pollen and nutrient deficiencies are checked. At first, that sounds like a convenient alternative to the lengthy route via the vet.

Caution is needed here, though: independent veterinary studies, including from dermatology, came to a much more critical result for this type of saliva and hair based test. In controlled comparisons, such tests could not reliably distinguish between truly allergic animals and control samples (such as hair from soft toys or plain salt water). In studies, a positive test result was actually correct in only about 15 percent of cases. This applies to this test category in general, not to vetevo specifically.

Urine test for cats: quick screening, not a diagnosis

The urine test for cats works with test strips that you read yourself at home, checking up to 10 parameters at once in about one minute. Among other things, it checks ketones (a possible sign of diabetes or a high fat diet), blood (a possible sign of urinary tract or kidney problems) and protein (a possible sign of kidney damage).

Urine test strips are an established screening tool that vet practices use as well. An abnormal value, however, is always a reason to see the vet, not a diagnosis on its own.

DNA test and other products

The DNA test determines your dog’s breed composition, the gut flora test analyses the composition of the gut bacteria. In addition, there are the Belly Bites 2.0, functional snacks that are meant to support general digestion.

Prices and discount code

Our code for you: with FLICKY15 you get 15 % off your next order at vetevo.

The Basic worm test for dogs costs about €29.99, the Basic allergy test around €109.99 and the DNA test about €129.99. A discount is especially worthwhile for the more expensive tests. You will find the current code on our vetevo coupon page and here:

Who is vetevo worth it for?

The worm test and the urine test are well suited as an additional, uncomplicated screening between regular vet visits. For the allergy test, we recommend seeing the result at most as a rough first indication and, if you specifically suspect a food intolerance, going for an elimination diet with veterinary support. You can read more about this in our guide to dog food allergies and protein sources.

And how much dignity your dog actually feels while you collect the stool sample for the worm test remains purely a matter for negotiation between the two of you. We would rather not get involved.

Frequently asked questions

What is vetevo, and what does it offer?

vetevo is a German company with its own laboratory that offers worm, allergy, gut flora, DNA and urine tests for dogs, cats and horses, with results in a free app.

How does the vetevo worm test work?

You collect stool samples over three days and send them to the laboratory, where they are tested for up to 9 worm species. This method is considered an established veterinary procedure.

How much does vetevo cost, and how can I save?

The Basic worm test costs about €29.99, the allergy test around €109.99 and the DNA test about €129.99. With the code FLICKY15 you save 15 % on your next order.

How reliable is the vetevo allergy test?

Studies on saliva and hair samples show clear limits: they could not reliably distinguish allergic animals from control samples. Please discuss a suspected allergy with your vet.

Does the urine test for cats replace a visit to the vet?

No. The test strip checks 10 parameters such as ketones, blood and protein in about one minute and gives first indications. It shows when a visit to the vet makes sense.

Is vetevo trustworthy?

The company runs its own laboratory, and the worm and urine tests are based on established methods. For the allergy test, we advise caution, as with comparable offers from other providers.

The short answer

If you recognise the early warning signs of overheating, you can react correctly right away. The right walking times, shade and adjusted amounts of water and food protect paws, circulation and breathing.

  • Normal body temperature 38 to 39 degrees, from 41 degrees life-threatening
  • Walks only early in the morning or late in the evening
  • Never leave your dog in the car, not even at 20 degrees
  • Smaller portions, water-rich food, meals in the cool hours

Do you know that moment when your dog simply stops in the middle of a walk, lies down in the nearest shade and refuses to go another metre? That is not stubbornness, that is his body, which reaches its limits in the heat much faster than ours. Here you will learn how to recognise heat dangers and how to adjust feeding so your four-legged friend gets safely through the summer.

38 to 39 °Cnormal body temperature
41 °Clife-threatening value
7 sec.back-of-hand test on asphalt

Recognising heat dangers

Panting is normal, but heavy, nonstop panting shows stress or overheating. Watch out for fast, deep breaths, foam at the mouth or noticeably dark red gums, which point to strain on the circulation caused by heat. If your dog also seems weak or disoriented, you need to act immediately.

Risk groups

Short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds such as pugs or bulldogs, older animals, overweight dogs and dogs with heart disease or breathing problems are particularly sensitive to heat. Dogs with a very dense coat also suffer more quickly in high humidity.

For them it is especially worth moving walks to early morning or late evening, reducing exercise and planning frequent, short drinking breaks. Cooling vests or wet towels help as well.

Underestimated everyday dangers

Hot asphalt burns paws, glass panes and cars heat up strongly, and even stagnant water can contribute to overheating. With light-coloured fur, direct sun can cause sunburn on the nose and ears, and wild ball games in the midday heat quickly lead to overexertion.

Never leave your dog in the car, not even briefly or with the window slightly open. Even at supposedly mild 20 degrees, the temperature inside rises alarmingly fast, more on this in the expert article on heat danger in the car (in German).

First aid for overheating

With heatstroke, every minute counts. This is what you do until you reach the vet:

  1. 1Into the shadeBring your dog into the shade or a cool, air-conditioned room immediately. Remove the muzzle or tight collars.
  2. 2Cool slowlyPlace damp towels with lukewarm water around the neck, chest, belly and paws. No ice-cold water, it can trigger shock.
  3. 3Offer waterOffer small sips of lukewarm water, but do not force your dog to drink.
  4. 4Call the vetCall at the same time and drive straight to the practice or animal clinic.
  5. 5If unconsciousKeep the airways clear and put your dog in the recovery position.

Cooling pads work well, but you should avoid direct contact with very cold ice packs, as this can damage the tissue. For serious health questions, please always talk to your vet.

How to protect your dog in summer

Only go out early in the morning or late in the evening and avoid sun and asphalt between 10 am and 6 pm. Reduce pace and distance, plan short, calm rounds and skip strenuous ball games on hot ground. At dusk, a reflective lead or a small torch helps. Short-nosed, older or very young dogs need more frequent breaks.

PAWSCheck before every walk

Paw balm or light dog boots help. Check the pads regularly for cracks or sore spots.

SKINSun protection

For light-coloured or short-haired dogs, dog-friendly sunscreen on nose, ears and belly, unscented and tested beforehand.

WATERSeveral drinking spots

Indoors and outdoors, fresh several times a day. Metal bowls keep water cool longer than plastic.

COOLING DOWNSwimming and shade

Clean waters without strong currents, with a life jacket if needed. Rinse off salt or algae afterwards.

On the go, pack a collapsible bowl and a water bottle, and rather offer small sips more often. Watch for signs of dehydration such as dry mucous membranes, sunken eyes, a fast but weak pulse or lethargy. After playing, give cool but not ice-cold water.

Shady resting places under trees or a parasol, a cooling mat or damp towels provide quick cooling in between. Check the coat regularly for ticks and skin irritation, because heat and damp skin encourage infections.

Adjusting feeding in summer

Feed early in the morning and late in the evening and avoid the midday and afternoon heat, because digestion produces extra heat. Split the daily ration into several small meals, for example instead of 400 grams once a day, give twice 200 grams or three times about 133 grams.

If your dog moves less in the heat, his calorie needs drop as well. Weigh him regularly and reduce portions by 10 to 20 percent if he is noticeably calmer.

Light food with plenty of water

Wet food or moist additions provide more water than dry food and are often easier to digest. Lean, cooked chicken or turkey without seasoning, small amounts of cooked rice or potato and a little cottage cheese or lactose-free yoghurt go down well.

Serve the food cool but not ice-cold, ten to fifteen minutes in the fridge is usually enough. Cut back on fatty snacks and fatty raw food, because fat takes longer to digest and produces extra heat.

Offering dog ice cream the right way

Dog ice cream is a nice cool extra, but no substitute for water. Unsalted chicken broth, lactose-free yoghurt or mashed banana work well as a base. Onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes or xylitol are completely off limits.

Make your own dog ice cream

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell that my dog is too hot?

Heavy, nonstop panting, dark red gums, glassy eyes, weakness or vomiting are warning signs. From about 39.5 degrees rectal, contact the vet as a precaution; from 41 degrees it is an acute emergency.

What helps immediately with overheating?

Shade or a cool room, remove muzzle and tight collars, cool with lukewarm water over neck, chest, belly and paws. No ice-cold water. Offer water, do not force it, and drive straight to the vet.

How do I prevent heatstroke?

Walks in the cool hours, shady paths instead of asphalt, always water and a collapsible bowl with you. Never leave your dog in the car and keep activities short for dogs at risk.

How should I feed on hot days?

Several small portions instead of one large one, with the main meal in the morning or evening. Cut back on energy-rich snacks if your dog is less active.

Which snacks are suitable in summer?

Seedless melon, small pieces of apple or chilled cucumber and carrot. Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic and heavily seasoned or salty foods are off limits.

How do I get my dog to drink?

Keep water freely available and refresh it often, add ice cubes to the bowl or unsalted broth. If your dog does not drink at all, seems lethargic or vomits, contact the vet.

haustierkost.de has specialised in fresh BARF food (raw feeding) for dogs, cats and ferrets since 2009 and was named test winner among BARF online shops in an independent test.

  • Very wide BARF range, plus dry and wet food
  • Own BARF calculator for the right amount
  • Free shipping from €79, delivery in insulated boxes

You know that moment when your dog or cat is already waiting at the front door because the courier is bringing the frozen food refill? For many owners who feed BARF, that is part of everyday life, and haustierkost.de is one of the best-known places for it in Germany. We take an honest look at the range, prices and delivery so you know whether an order is worth it for you.

What is haustierkost.de?

haustierkost.de was founded in Düsseldorf in 2009 by Florian Kellner and René Mahnert, initially as a small office in the middle of the city. Today, according to the company, it is the market leader for fresh food for dogs, cats and ferrets in Germany, with around 300,000 customers, about 50 employees and a 6,000 square metre site in the Heerdt district.

For more than 15 years, the brand has stood for specialist BARF knowledge rather than an interchangeable side range of some pet shop.

The range at a glance

The range covers much more than just frozen meat, even though BARF is clearly at its centre.

BARFFrozen meat

Muscle meat, offal, green tripe, omasum, bones and cartilage, individually or as a menu. Plus pure meat cans and gently cooked variants.

READY-MADEMenus and classic food

Ready-made BARF menus with meat, vegetables and supplements in the right ratio, as well as dry and wet food and organic variants.

SUPPLEMENTSVitamins, oils, herbs

For targeted supplementing of the BARF ration.

EXTRASSnacks and accessories

Chews, snacks and accessories for feeding and storing the frozen meat.

Ideally, this lets you cover all your needs with one order instead of switching back and forth between several shops.

Prices and the BARF calculator

The exact prices depend heavily on the type of meat, the quantity and the combination, and BARF is generally not a fixed-price product. Independent tests have credited the shop with solid value for money overall, combined with the widest BARF range in a direct comparison with other providers.

Delivery: insulated box, shipping costs and delivery areas

Because frozen meat must not break the cold chain, the delivery reaches you in special insulated boxes. Shipping is free from an order value of €79, below that a flat shipping fee applies.

The regular delivery time is 1 to 3 working days, and if you are in a hurry there is also an express option with next-day delivery. Deliveries go not only within Germany but to a total of 12 European countries, including Austria, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands and Scandinavia.

Food flat rate and discount code

If you reorder regularly anyway, the food flat rate subscription (Futter-Flat) is worth it. It gives you a permanent 5 percent discount, the delivery interval can be adjusted flexibly, and you can cancel at any time with no minimum term. That way you save automatically without having to look for a new discount code every time.

On our Haustierkost coupon page you will also find the current codes:

Experiences and independent tests

In an independent comparison test by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Verbraucherstudien (German Society for Consumer Studies) in cooperation with N24, haustierkost.de was named overall test winner among several BARF online shops, with top scores in areas such as range, advice and customer service.

The test is a few years old, but it matches more recent customer feedback: on review platforms the shop now has more than 12,500 customer reviews, many of which praise friendly, knowledgeable advice and fast, reliable delivery in the insulated boxes.

Still, never rely on a single test or individual reviews alone; it is best to watch for yourself how your pet reacts to the change of food. For serious health questions, please always talk to your vet.

Who is haustierkost.de worth it for?

haustierkost.de is a good fit for owners who are interested in BARF and want the widest possible specialised range in one place, including their own calculator for the right dosage. If you also need classic dry or wet food, you will find it here too.

If you are still unsure whether BARF or dry food suits your dog better, our comparison of BARF and dry food will help you decide.

And if an insulated box is about to land on your doorstep: keep your eyes open when unpacking. Some dogs have an amazingly good nose for which box smells especially interesting.

The short answer

According to the provider, Butternut Box costs from €2.61 per day; the exact price depends on your dog’s energy needs. There is no minimum term, and after cancelling you can even reorder single boxes without a subscription.

  • Small, calm dog: around €80 a month
  • Larger boxes are cheaper per day
  • Pausing and cancelling are free, until 9 pm two days before delivery
  • With the code FLICKY you save 40 % on the first two boxes

Fresh food tailored to your dog sounds great, and before you decide, you naturally want to know exactly what it really costs per month. Your dog would probably sign up for a subscription right away for the taste of Butternut Box, without a glance at the numbers. You are understandably a bit more thorough, and that is exactly what this article is for.

40 %discount on the first 2 boxes with FLICKY
from €2.61per day according to the provider
around €80per month for a small dog

What is Butternut Box, and who is it worth it for?

Butternut Box delivers freshly cooked dog food straight to your home, calculated individually based on your dog’s weight, age and activity. Instead of dry food from the shelf, you get portioned fresh pouches that you freeze and thaw as needed.

It is particularly worthwhile for dogs with sensitive stomachs, for picky eaters and for everyone who wants to save themselves the cooking. How the food performs in everyday life, which recipes there are and how the switch works, you can read in our Butternut Box review. Here it is all about money.

How much does Butternut Box cost per month?

Butternut Box states an entry price of €2.61 per day. For a small, rather calm dog, that comes to around €80 a month. The bigger and more active your dog is, the more food he needs and the higher the price, because Butternut calculates every box based on the daily energy requirement. The price calculator on the Butternut website shows you the exact amount, without signing up.

Which box size is the cheapest?

Your first delivery is always the trial box with meals for 7 or 14 days, for most dogs it is 14. After that, you choose boxes for 21 or 28 days and a delivery interval between 7 and 56 days. According to Butternut, larger boxes are cheaper because packaging and shipping weigh less per day. If your freezer has the space, the 28-day box is the most economical choice.

How to keep costs down

You can estimate in advance how much food your dog needs with our pet food calculator.

Discount code FLICKY: 40 % on the first boxes

With the code FLICKY you get 40 % off your first two Butternut Box deliveries via Promo Codes for Pets, and the code has no expiry date. This reduces exactly the risk that makes most people hesitate before their first order: spending a lot of money on food when you do not yet know whether your dog likes it.

Example calculation: for a small dog, the 14-day trial box at €2.61 per day costs around €36.50. With 40 % off you save around €14.60 and pay only around €21.90; with larger dogs you save correspondingly more.

The discount applies to active subscriptions. If you cancel right after the first delivery, it no longer applies to the next box. The current codes from our Butternut Box coupon page:

Butternut Box without a subscription: is that possible?

As a new customer, you always start with the trial box, after which the subscription starts automatically. So there is no single box completely without a subscription to begin with.

After that, though, there is an official way that feels almost like “no subscription”: once you have cancelled your subscription, you can order a one-off box in your account at any time. Butternut takes over your previous plan, and you adjust delivery date, recipes and quantity beforehand.

  1. 1Cancel the subscriptionThe one-off box is only available after cancelling.
  2. 2Open your accountOn the home page of your account, under “Is there anything else we can do?”, click “Order a one-off box”.
  3. 3Adjust the boxChoose delivery date, recipes and quantity. Boxes are packed in steps of 7 pouches, with the smallest portion sizes 14 is the minimum.

The best part: a one-off box does not reactivate your subscription. So you only order when you really need food.

Pausing or cancelling the subscription

Butternut Box does not tie you down. There is no minimum term, and you can adjust, pause or cancel your subscription in your customer account without fees. You can even cancel and rejoin as often as you like.

To cancel, log in, click your profile icon, open “Account details” and scroll down to the red “Cancel subscription” button. Then answer a short survey and confirm. If a payment is still outstanding, the cancellation only works once it has been settled. The exact steps are also in the official help article on cancelling (in German).

Before you cancel completely, it is worth looking at the alternatives: on holiday you simply pause, and if the subscription gets too expensive, a smaller portion size or the combination of cancelling and one-off boxes may be the right choice.

What a dog costs in total per month, including vet, insurance and accessories, you can read in our guide How much does a dog cost per month?

The short answer

On average, you should expect around 80 to 250 euros per month in Germany, depending on size, food quality and whether you use insurance or pet care. On top of that come one-off costs for getting the dog, the first equipment and, if needed, neutering.

  • Must-haves: food, vet check-ups, dog tax, liability insurance, accessories
  • Optional: dog school, health or surgery insurance, pet care
  • Plan an emergency fund of 1,500 to 4,000 euros
  • Liability insurance and savings lower your risk with any dog size

A dog does not cost peanuts, more like quite a lot of euros, to be honest right from the start. If you held your breath at your last vet visit when the bill came: welcome to the club. Dogs are true masters at winning our hearts and keeping our wallets busy at the same time.

To help you keep track, we go step by step: first the costs by dog size, then each type of cost in detail, after that the one-off costs at the start and finally which dog fits your budget and where saving really pays off.

€80 to €250Costs per month
€1,500 to €4,000recommended emergency fund
3dog sizes compared

What affects the costs

Three things mainly decide how expensive your dog will be: size, breed and living situation. Body size has a direct effect on how much food is needed and on medication doses, bigger dogs simply need more of everything. Some breeds come with breed-related health risks that raise vet costs.

Your living situation counts too: with a garden, your dog can let off steam at no extra cost (unless he loves digging up the English lawn, but let’s leave that aside). If you live in a flat and are often out during the day, you are more likely to need a dog sitter or a doggy day care, and they cost 15 to 35 euros per day.

Dog school or health insurance are possible for any size and optional. A Chihuahua benefits from good training just as much as a Labrador.

How much a dog costs per month, by size

So you can compare small, medium and large fairly, the table shows the same cost items for each size.

Cost item Small (e.g. Chihuahua) Medium (e.g. Beagle) Large (e.g. Labrador)
Food €30 to €60 €50 to €90 €80 to €150
Vet check-ups (routine) €20 to €40 €20 to €40 €20 to €40
Dog tax €4 to €17 €4 to €17 €4 to €17
Liability insurance €3 to €10 €3 to €10 €3 to €10
Accessories (toys, grooming products etc.) €10 to €30 €10 to €30 €10 to €30
Subtotal (must-haves) approx. €67 to €157 approx. €87 to €187 approx. €117 to €247
+ Dog school/training (optional) €10 to €20 €10 to €20 €10 to €20
+ Health/surgery insurance (optional) €5 to €60 €5 to €60 €5 to €60
+ Pet care/other (optional) €10 to €20 €10 to €20 €15 to €35

For vet check-ups and insurance, you will end up closer to the upper end if your breed is more prone to illness or your dog is bigger. The row “Pet care/other” is a monthly average for occasional care, not the daily rate of a dog sitter. The must-haves apply to every dog, the optional items you add as needed.

The main expenses in detail

Food, vet and cover are where the budget varies the most. But small items like poop bags or toys also add up quickly.

Food and nutrition

For small dogs, expect about 30 to 60 euros per month, for medium-sized dogs 50 to 90 euros, for large dogs 80 to 150 euros. High-quality dry food is usually cheaper per kilogram than wet food or BARF (raw feeding). Look at the ingredient declaration and energy content and work out the real price per day instead of just the pack price. Large packs or subscriptions save 10 to 30 percent.

Often overlooked are treats and chews at 5 to 20 euros per month, special food for allergic or senior dogs with often a 10 to 50 percent surcharge, and BARF, which can be more expensive depending on the meat quality. How much food your dog needs is calculated by our pet food calculator based on weight and activity.

Vet and preventive care

Regular preventive care with vaccinations, deworming and parasite protection costs on average 20 to 40 euros per month. Breed-related problems can increase this. Emergencies or operations come on top and quickly cost 1,000 to 4,000 euros, which is exactly what the emergency fund is for. Put aside at least 30 euros a month or look into health insurance.

Typical preventive care costs · tap a level

Annual vaccination (€50 to €120): once a year

Health and surgery insurance

Dog health insurance usually costs 20 to 60 euros per month, depending on age, breed and plan. Surgery insurance is available from about 5 to 15 euros, but it only covers operations. For high-risk breeds or large dogs, surgery insurance is often worth it, for robust small dogs your own savings can be cheaper. Compare price and cover, feel free to use several comparison sites.

What to look for in insurance

Liability insurance and dog tax

Dog liability insurance is cheap and often mandatory depending on the federal state. The Verbraucherzentrale (German consumer advice centre) gives a neutral overview. Premiums are around 3 to 10 euros per month and cover personal injury and property damage and often third-party claims. Without liability insurance, you are personally liable up to the full amount of your assets.

The dog tax is set by your municipality, usually 30 to 200 euros per year, in big cities mostly 90 to 120 euros. Higher rates often apply to listed breeds or additional dogs. Register your dog in time, otherwise you risk fines.

One-off costs and first equipment

Before or shortly after your dog moves in, you pay the purchase or adoption fee, a bed, leads, bowls and the first grooming products. Rather buy high-quality basics than cheap throwaway stuff, your future self will thank you. What your first equipment costs is worked out by our first equipment cost calculator in just a few clicks.

Getting a dog: shelter, animal welfare or breeder?

Where your dog comes from determines most of the one-off costs. Cheap puppies from dubious sources look tempting, but often cause high vet costs later. With breeders, look for health certificates, pedigree papers and socialisation.

SHELTER€250 to €450

Usually including vaccination, microchip and initial care.

ANIMAL WELFARE€350 to €700

Often including transport and health check.

BREEDER€1,200 to €2,500

For common breeds. For trendy or rare breeds, quickly €2,000 to €3,000 and more.

If you adopt a dog through animal welfare, also read what matters when settling in your rescue dog and how to change his diet the right way.

If your dog has a higher genetic risk for such defects, plan your financial safety net especially carefully.

Neutering

An item that often gets forgotten when planning: for male dogs, neutering usually costs 200 to 300 euros, for female dogs, because of the more complex procedure, more like 300 to 400 euros and more. Whether and when it makes sense is best discussed with your vet. With shelter dogs it is sometimes already included, sometimes not.

Starter equipment and extras

For the basic equipment, expect these price ranges: basket or bed 40 to 150 euros depending on size, lead plus collar or harness 40 to 150 euros, bowls 15 to 60 euros, transport crate or car restraint 60 to 300 euros, grooming products such as brush, nail clippers and poop bags 20 to 80 euros, and basic toys and a first aid kit 30 to 80 euros. Buy sturdy leads and a well-fitting harness instead of cheap sets, ceramic bowls last longer and are more hygienic.

Useful extras are a puppy course (130 to 250 euros for group courses), dental care and grooming products (20 to 60 euros one-off, plus as needed), safety items such as reflectors or an LED collar (10 to 40 euros) and new toys every few months for 10 to 30 euros. For travelling you may add a foldable water bowl, travel bag or safety belts, and if you are often away, also dog boarding or day care.

Choosing the right dog for your budget and saving money

Plan realistically: calculate fixed items like food, tax and liability insurance and build a fund for emergencies. Choose a breed or mix whose health risks, energy needs and grooming needs fit your everyday life and budget.

According to the FCI’s scientific report on brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, short-nosed breeds such as Pugs or French Bulldogs often have higher vet costs due to breathing and eye problems. Large breeds need more food and have more expensive operations. Mixed breeds from the shelter are usually cheaper and healthier, the bargain hunters among four-legged friends, so to speak.

Ask yourself honestly: how much time do you have for exercise, training and grooming? Do you want a dog with expensive special food or frequent coat care? Also talk to breeders, shelters and owners to get a realistic idea of everyday life and costs.

How to save without cutting back on quality

By the way, puppies apparently find furniture delicious. To be honest, that belongs in the budget too.
