The short answer

Good basic equipment can be bought cheaply without sacrificing quality. Discounts, promotions and choosing the right brands noticeably save money on recurring expenses, and safe online shopping avoids costly mistakes.

  • Buy it right once instead of paying twice
  • Good clumping litter is often cheaper in the end
  • Choose food by age, use bulk packs and subscriptions
  • Compare prices, shipping costs and return policies

Have you ever bought an expensive new toy, only for your cat to spend hours playing with the empty box it came in instead? You and your house tiger are not alone. Many cat owners are looking for ways to save on good cat supplies without losing out on quality.

The love of boxes is no coincidence, but the best proof of a basic truth: cats have their very own economic logic, and it has precious little to do with ours. With a few clever decisions about food, accessories and shopping, you spend noticeably less without your cat noticing anything. Except maybe that there are even more boxes left over to play with. Here are seven tips that really work in everyday life.

7money-saving tips at a glance
3helpful calculators
7 to 10 daysfor switching food

Buy the basic equipment right the first time

To start with, you do not need all that much. What matters is choosing the right model straight away, because this is where the most expensive trap lies: buying twice. If you go for the cheapest model the first time, you usually end up buying the sturdier version a few months later. Buying twice means paying twice, and your cat would rather have more treats than cat parents with money worries.

Basic equipment for cats

Shallow bowls are more comfortable, especially for short-nosed cats. With several cats, a separate set of bowl and litter box per animal takes a lot of rivalry out of everyday life. For the cat tree, carrier and first aid kit, it is worth looking at second-hand offers and local classified ads.

What your starter equipment realistically costs is calculated by our starter equipment cost calculator, with its own cat mode instead of a rough dog flat rate.

Invest in durability when buying a cat tree

The next classic of cat logic: you buy the most expensive model with sisal posts and three platforms, and your cat chooses the corner of the sofa or the door frame. A cat tree is still worth it, because it at least diverts part of the urge to scratch away from your furniture.

Look for a heavy base, real sisal posts and several platforms. Wobbly, thin tubes tip over quickly and can injure your cat, so saving in the wrong place does not pay off here. For smaller budgets, modular kits or used cat trees are a good choice, and replacement covers and extra platforms extend their life considerably.

You can find scratching furniture and toys from low to high price ranges at Fressnapf, for example, which has accessories for cats, dogs and even birds.

Choose litter box and litter wisely

Your cat may be picky about the cat tree, but you should be picky about the litter box. Believe me, your cat has long been keeping a merciless five-star rating of her toilet, even if she never reads the review out to you but at most pees next to it.

Rule of thumb: one litter box per cat, plus one more. Open boxes are easier to clean, covered ones often score with odour control and privacy. Try out which one your cat prefers.

Choose food by age, pack size and brand

Now cat logic really picks up speed. You buy the premium wet food with salmon and duck, your cat sniffs it briefly and walks off in a huff. The next day she wants the cheapest variety of all. You cannot outsmart this dictatorship of taste, but you can still plan.

Kittens need different food than seniors. Wet food provides moisture, and high-quality dry food also supports dental care. If you change the variety, give your cat 7 to 10 days to adjust. Bulk packs or subscriptions save extra money with regular use.

How much food your cat needs is calculated by our pet food calculator in cat mode. Whether she already counts as a senior is shown by the cat age calculator, before you switch to expensive senior food. High-quality cat food with current codes:

Actively use discounts and promotions

There is one thing your cat reliably does not understand: discount codes. The rustling of the packaging, on the other hand, she can hear through three closed doors. So with this tip, you are allowed to think for her.

Verified discount codes, volume discounts above a certain order value or free shipping above a minimum order add up nicely over the year. Seasonal sales are good opportunities to stock up on long-lasting supplies such as litter or dry food. The easiest way to stay up to date is our weekly newsletter, where we bundle such promotions for cat supplies.

Compare prices instead of trusting the first offer

While you open tabs with different shops, your cat is probably sitting on the keyboard typing “asdfjkl” into your order form. Ignore her for a moment, comparing prices pays off. The same item often costs noticeably different amounts depending on the shop. Our coupon overview shows you where discounts are currently active, for example at Fressnapf with food, cat trees, toys and carriers:

Do not just look at the total price, but also at shipping costs and return policies. A low price is of little use if returning the item costs more than you saved. In the customer account, many shops show personalised discounts or savings packs, and with automatic reordering for litter or food you avoid expensive rush orders.

Shop safely online

Finally, the point where your cat does not get in your way for once: safety when shopping online. No boxes, keyboard sabotage or dictatorship of taste.

Before buying, check whether the site uses a secure connection, and pay via safe methods such as PayPal or credit card. Find out about the right of withdrawal and the terms and conditions, especially who pays the shipping costs in case of a return. For health-related products such as supplements, it is worth taking a close look at the ingredient list and choosing tested brands. For serious health questions, please always talk to your vet.

In the end, the insight from the beginning remains: your cat will never understand why the toy was more important than the box around it. You can still shop smartly by planning for equipment, food and safety and staying relaxed where the cat has the final say anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy cat food cheaply without compromising on quality?

Compare several shops, for example via our coupon overview. Look out for promotional prices, volume discounts and coupons, and compare the price per kilogram instead of just the total price.

Is it worth buying cat litter in bulk?

Usually yes, especially with mineral or clumping litter. Check your storage space and whether your cat accepts the material, and test new brands in a small pack first. Dusty or poorly clumping litter gets more expensive in the long run.

Which subscriptions or savings packs make sense?

Trial subscriptions with a discount on the first pack are good for testing, and food subscriptions often lower the unit price and shipping costs. Bundles pay off if you have enough storage space. Always look for flexible cancellation terms.

How do I save on cat trees, carriers and toys?

Go for sturdy accessories instead of cheap replacements. Second-hand platforms and flea markets often offer cat trees and carriers in good condition. For toys, homemade ones from cardboard or string are often enough.

Are own brands a good alternative for cats?

For basics such as dry food or litter, often yes; the ingredient list and reviews help you judge. For special food for allergies or illnesses, rather rely on proven brands or a vet’s recommendation.

How do I plan the monthly costs for my cat?

List food, litter, vaccinations, deworming, insurance and toys and work out a monthly average. Put aside a buffer of 10 to 20 percent for emergencies and compare prices regularly.

The short answer

Mera is a German family business from Kevelaer that has been making pet food since 1949, now in its third generation. With essential, pure sensitive and vital, Mera covers everyday feeding, sensitive stomachs and diets supervised by a vet.

  • Three clearly separated lines for different needs
  • Transparent percentage declaration
  • Independent food score: 46 out of 100 points
  • Criticism: some recipes contain a lot of offal instead of muscle meat

Do you know that situation when your dog has had the same sensitive stomach for weeks and with every new food you are unsure whether it will be better this time? Mera is one of the brands that has developed its own product line for exactly these cases.

We look at what makes Mera stand out as a brand, how the three lines essential, pure sensitive and vital differ and what independent tests say about them.

1949year founded, now in the 3rd generation
70,000 tof pet food per year
46 out of 100points in the independent food score
€4 to €5per kg Pure Sensitive (12.5 kg pack)

What is Mera?

Mera is a German family business from Kevelaer on the Lower Rhine that has been making dog and cat food since 1949, now in its third generation. Every year Mera produces more than 70,000 tonnes of pet food and exports to almost 50 countries worldwide.

Production is certified to IFS and BRC and, according to the provider, runs CO2 compensated on 100 percent renewable energy. With this, Mera deliberately positions itself as a German manufacturer with a long tradition that also produces sustainably.

The three product lines

Instead of one single all round food, Mera offers three clearly defined lines for different needs.

EVERYDAYessential

Entry line for healthy dogs and cats in all life stages, from puppy to senior, at a rather budget friendly price.

SENSITIVE STOMACHSpure sensitive

Single protein recipes with only one animal protein source and one carbohydrate source per recipe. Around 4 to 5 euros per kilo for 12.5 kilo packs.

DIET FOODvital

Developed together with vets, to support treatment of overweight, gastrointestinal problems, joint problems, food allergies or kidney insufficiency.

What independent tests say

In an independent food score, Mera reaches 46 out of 100 points overall, a rather mixed result. For the tested recipe Pure Sensitive Beef (wet food), a meat content of 72 percent is stated. However, tests criticise that this share consists mainly of offal such as lung, udder, heart and rumen rather than muscle meat, and the meat quality is accordingly rated only 1.5 out of 5 points. The recipe as a whole is also considered very simple, without vegetables or fruit.

On the positive side, the declaration stands out: Mera states percentages transparently. That makes it much easier to assess the food, regardless of the overall verdict.

Prices and current discount offers

Prices differ depending on line and recipe. For Pure Sensitive in the large 12.5 kilo packs, you pay around 4 to 5 euros per kilo.

Via our Mera coupon page there are regularly changing offers, for example trial packs for dogs and cats or starter packs for newly arrived puppies and kittens with a voucher for your next purchase. Since the offers change all the time, you will always see the current ones here:

Who is Mera worth it for?

Mera suits owners who are looking for an established German manufacturer with clearly separated lines for everyday feeding, sensitive stomachs and diet food, and who value a transparent declaration. If, on the other hand, you expect a particularly high share of pure muscle meat, independent tests still see room for improvement here, so a comparison with other brands is worthwhile in that case.

By the way, your dog will care very little that Mera neatly divides its products into essential, pure sensitive and vital. For him, all that counts is what tasty food lands in the bowl. That is exactly why your own look at the ingredient list is worth more in the end than any line name.

Frequently asked questions

What is Mera, and who is behind it?

Mera is a German family business from Kevelaer that has been making dog and cat food since 1949, now in its third generation, and produces more than 70,000 tonnes of pet food a year, a large part of it for export.

What is the difference between essential, pure sensitive and vital?

Essential is the budget friendly everyday line for all life stages, pure sensitive relies on single protein for sensitive stomachs, and vital is a diet food developed with vets.

How much does Mera cost, and how can I save?

For Pure Sensitive in the 12.5 kilo packs, you pay around 4 to 5 euros per kilo. On our coupon page there are changing discounts on trial and starter packs.

How does Mera perform in independent tests?

An independent food score rates Mera at 46 out of 100 points. The transparent declaration is praised, while the high share of offal compared to muscle meat in some recipes is criticised.

Is Mera food grain free?

Several recipes, especially in the pure sensitive line, are grain free. But that does not automatically apply to the whole range, so it is always worth checking the ingredient list.

Are there special offers for puppies and kittens?

Yes, there are regularly dedicated starter packs for newly arrived puppies and kittens with a discount and a voucher for your next purchase. The terms change, so check the current coupon page before you buy.

The short answer

When it comes to food, a former street dog above all needs patience: a gradual switch, small frequent meals and easily digestible food. That is how a stray becomes a stable, healthy dog in the long run.

  • Switch food over 7 to 10 days
  • Three to four small meals at first, later two
  • Treats at most 10 % of daily calories
  • Have a stool sample checked by the vet before switching

Have you ever wondered how a dog who has lived all her life on bin buffets and chance finds suddenly sits calmly in front of a bowl of chicken and rice? In our home, this story is called Flicky. Officially she is actually Flick, but the more affectionate “Flicky” has stuck with us.

Flicky comes from Bulgaria, picked up near Sofia together with her brother. His name is Flack. Yes, really: Flick and Flack. As if the two had met at gymnastics and never wanted to be separated again. Nobody knows anything about parents or other siblings; only the two snow-white furballs, just three months old, were found.

Flicky’s way to us

Flicky spent a month in the shelter in Sofia before she went to a foster home on the Swabian Jura. Quite a change of scenery for a street kid from the southeast. There she waited for more than another month without a single person showing any interest in her. On 17 November 2023, that finally changed: Flicky moved in with us.

She brought a whole backpack of small challenges into the flat: unfamiliar preferences, a sensitive stomach and gut, and plenty of questions that we only learned to answer bit by bit. Especially when it came to food.

Here you will learn which feeding mistakes to avoid after adoption and how to switch your street dog’s diet safely and step by step. How settling in, health care and reputable rehoming work in general, you can read in our guide Adopting a street dog. For serious health questions, please always talk to your vet.

How Flicky learned to eat properly

Like most strays, Flicky never had a fixed feeding plan. Eating was a matter of luck, sometimes a scrap, sometimes nothing for a week. No wonder she wolfed down every meal in the first few days as if there were no tomorrow. Only over time did she realise: the bowl now comes reliably, twice a day, without any competition from an imaginary pack.

Feeding habits and digestion in strays

Strays have often learned to eat irregularly and opportunistically. They snatch scraps, share resources with other animals or gulp everything down as long as something is there. For you, this means: your dog may show food guarding, eat hastily or come with a sensitive digestion.

Many street dogs also have parasites or a gut flora that is out of balance. So have a stool sample checked by the vet before switching food.

  1. 1Have a stool sample checkedClarify parasites and gut flora with the vet before you switch.
  2. 2Start easily digestibleCooked chicken with rice or a well-tolerated premium wet food.
  3. 3Feed small and oftenThree to four small meals at first, this calms the stomach.
  4. 4Increase slowlyGradually increase portions and new food over 7 to 10 days.
  5. 5Two meals later onAdjust portions to weight, activity and body condition, note weight and stool.

For Flicky, this concretely meant: a tiny bit of dry food in the right kibble size, cooked chicken, rice and some pumpkin, in small portions four times a day. Pretty unspectacular, but exactly right for a tummy that was used to improvisation rather than reliability.

Typical feeding mistakes after adoption

A common mistake is overfeeding out of pure compassion. Too much food leads to diarrhoea, excess weight and, paradoxically, to your dog associating food with stress rather than trust. Another classic is switching immediately to very fatty or unfamiliar dry food, which irritates the gut unnecessarily.

Persistent problems always belong in the hands of a vet.

A balanced feeding plan

Start with a solid basis: high-quality wet or dry food with clearly declared proteins and without cheap fillers. For sensitive strays, easily digestible recipes are best, and now and then you can add a high-quality wet food. With our matching discount codes, good quality stays affordable.

If needed, gradually add fibre for gut health, probiotics after consulting the vet and, if necessary, special therapeutic diets.

In the long run, good nutrition protects against deficiencies and digestive problems, which are common in strays. Look for high-quality protein such as chicken, beef or fish to maintain muscle, and omega-3 fats to fight inflammation. Several small meals are gentle on a sensitive stomach and prevent excess weight. Avoid spicy, very fatty or untested raw food meals until you know how your dog reacts. After antibiotics or a gastrointestinal illness, pro- and prebiotics help rebuild the gut flora.

If you are looking for practical subscription options for fresh food, you can save with a coupon for fresh meals.

What really helped Flicky

The bland diet of chicken, rice and pumpkin gave her energy in the first days without overloading her stomach. After two weeks, we increased the protein and added a high-quality fish oil for her coat. This noticeably helped with minor skin problems and brought back much more zest for life and urge to move. Bit by bit, the cautious furball turned into a real whirlwind, and that is what she still is today.

Regular weight checks and a feeding plan that took age, activity and health into account prevented setbacks. Before adding supplements, we had her blood values checked by the vet when needed. That is how the shy stray from near Sofia became a stable, strong dog with good gut health and an appetite that leaves nothing to be desired today.

Frequently asked questions

Which food suits a newly adopted dog?

A high-quality complete food with a clearly declared meat source, suited to age, weight and activity. After street food, start with something easily digestible, such as lamb, chicken or rice-based food. You can find more tips for sensitive dogs in our allergy guide.

How do I switch the diet gently?

Over seven to ten days, mixing a little more new food into the old each day. Start with small, frequent portions and watch stool, appetite and energy. If there are problems, slow down the switch or ask the vet.

Which nutrient deficiencies do street dogs often have?

They often lack protein, fat, vitamin B12, vitamin A as well as iron and zinc. A balanced complete food covers this. A blood test shows specific deficits; for severely emaciated dogs, the vet will recommend targeted supplements.

How do I find the right amount of food?

Weigh your dog, note his body condition and start with the pack recommendation or our pet food calculator. If he gains weight too slowly after two weeks, increase the calories in small steps of 10 to 20 percent.

How can I recognise a food intolerance?

Typical signs are recurring diarrhoea, vomiting, itching, skin redness, hair loss or ear infections. A single-protein or hypoallergenic diet over four to eight weeks helps. If problems persist, go to the vet.

How do treats fit into the feeding plan?

They are great for training and bonding, but should make up at most 10 percent of daily calories. Choose low-calorie snacks, avoid splintering bones and subtract the treat calories from the meal.

The short answer

Tales & Tails consistently relies on a single animal protein source per recipe. For sensitive dogs this can noticeably reduce intolerances, and a transparent declaration makes choosing easier for you.

  • Lamb, venison, goat, duck, horse and fish as protein sources
  • Soft dry food, wet food and snacks
  • Subscription with no minimum term, delivery every 2 to 8 weeks
  • Permanent 15 % discount with the subscription

Have you ever spent hours poring over ingredient lists because your dog scratches or has a tummy ache after every meal? You are not alone. That is why many dog owners switch to single protein food to narrow down intolerances, and they want to know whether Tales & Tails really helps. Your dog would never read the ingredient list himself, he prefers to rely on his nose, so it is all the better that you do it for him.

We look at recipes, declaration, experiences and the subscription so you can quickly decide whether the food fits your everyday life. For serious health questions, please always talk to your vet.

What does single protein mean?

Single protein (monoprotein) means only one animal protein source is in focus. This makes it easier to test for and rule out intolerances in a targeted way. If your dog often itches or has diarrhoea, you can systematically check what he reacts to with only one protein source.

Still, watch out for additions such as oils or vegetable purees, they can also trigger reactions. “Lamb” should really mean lamb and not be hidden under “meat and animal derivatives”. According to the provider, Tales & Tails promises: where it says lamb, there is only lamb inside.

Varieties and food types

As protein sources, Tales & Tails offers lamb, venison, goat, duck and horse among others, as well as recipes with sustainably caught fish. Lamb is often considered well tolerated, more unusual sources such as goat or horse are interesting if your dog has already eaten a lot of lamb, beef or chicken. To your dog, “horse” does not sound any more exotic than “chicken” anyway.

Fish is a good fit when skin and coat are the focus. But some dogs also react to fish, so watch skin and stool closely after the switch.

DRYSoft dry food

Easy to store and calorie dense.

WETWet food

Lots of moisture and a stronger taste, often goes down better with picky eaters.

SNACKSRewards

During an elimination diet only with the same protein source as the main food.

SPECIALGrain free and hypoallergenic

Potato, pumpkin or peas instead of wheat and corn, according to the provider without sugar and fillers.

Some dogs first sniff the new bowl sceptically from all sides, just like a restaurant critic who does not yet know whether to take a seat at all. There is no food that suits all dogs equally well. Watch your dog’s reaction over six to eight weeks before you judge.

How to read ingredients and declaration

What matters are clear quantities, recognisable meat sources and transparent additives. A good ingredient list names specific types of meat with percentages, for example 75 percent fresh lamb, 12 percent potato, 8 percent peas. If percentages are missing or there are only collective terms, that is a warning sign.

What to look for in the ingredient list

Organ meats such as heart or liver provide vitamins and trace elements, but the amount makes the difference: too much liver noticeably raises the vitamin A content, too much stomach or carcass changes the mineral profile. Fish oil provides omega 3 fatty acids for skin, coat and joints.

Experiences and tolerance

Many dogs with sensitive digestion respond positively to a single protein recipe. With venison or fish varieties, owners report less diarrhoea and less frequent vomiting just one to two weeks after a slow switch. However, some declarations are not complete throughout, which makes the assessment for allergies a little harder.

Small breeds and picky eaters often take very well to the wet food varieties, large breeds usually to the dry food too. Active herding or hunting dogs may need extra calories, so check the feeding recommendation. For mixed breeds, a small trial pack before a big purchase helps.

Owners of mixed breeds report better skin and coat condition, for example less scratching after four weeks or more stable digestion in an older dog. Anyone who has listened to scratching in the next room for nights on end knows how much a quiet night is worth. Some criticise the lack of exact quantities on the packaging.

Independent tests rate Tales & Tails differently, some award solid scores, others see room for improvement in transparency and meat content. So combine several tests with your own experience.

Subscription, discount and discount code

In the subscription you freely set the delivery interval, every 2 to 8 weeks, with no minimum term. You can change the interval, number of packs and delivery address at any time in your customer account. There you can also pause the subscription, change the next delivery date, swap a product or reorder earlier orders. The order history also shows you whether skin or digestive reactions coincided with a particular product.

Every dog owner knows the reproachful look when the food bag suddenly contains nothing but air. With the subscription you get a permanent 15 percent discount from the first delivery. If you prefer to buy once, you will find the current codes on our Tales & Tails coupon page:

Frequently asked questions

Which dogs is single protein food suitable for?

Especially for dogs with recurring itching, diarrhoea or skin problems. It also helps if your dog has already eaten several protein sources and you want to narrow down the triggers.

How do I recognise a food intolerance?

Typical signs are chronic itching, recurring diarrhoea, hair loss or ear infections, especially if they clearly improve after a food change. For serious questions, please talk to your vet.

Which protein source is best for sensitive dogs?

Often unusual proteins such as horse or goat, because the body has not yet developed a sensitisation to them. Fish works well as long as there is no fish allergy.

How quickly does a food change work?

Digestive problems often improve within two to four weeks. Skin and coat take longer, this can take eight to twelve weeks.

How do I switch gently to a new food?

Over seven to ten days, with a little more new food every day. Watch stool, skin and energy and slow down if something gets worse. An elimination diet should be accompanied by a vet.

What should I look for in the ingredient list?

A clearly declared protein source and ideally quantities. Avoid lots of additives, flavour enhancers and terms like “animal meal” that can hide several protein sources.

The short answer

A street dog brings his whole previous life with him: survival strategies, a few fears and, with a bit of luck, the first tentative tail wag. Patience, thorough health care and a reputable rescue organisation are the key.

  • Patience and a clear routine are a must, not an extra
  • Go to the vet right away, even if the dog seems healthy
  • You recognise reputable rescues by contract, documents and aftercare
  • Rabies protection usually only takes effect 21 to 28 days after the first vaccination

A street dog, also called a stray, has grown up without a permanent home and without continuous human care, usually on the street, in a pack or as a loner in towns and villages in southern and eastern Europe. Such a dog does not simply move in with you. He brings his whole previous life into your home.

Between shelter paperwork, vet appointments and the first walks, the same questions quickly come up: How does a dog like this tick? What do I need to watch out for health-wise? And how do I find a rescue organisation I can trust? That is exactly what this is about. For serious health questions, please always talk to your vet.

3-3-3rule for settling in
21 to 28 daysuntil rabies protection takes effect
5 to 10 min.short training sessions

Understanding street dog behaviour

Street dogs have often survived on their own for months or years. That leaves its mark. Mistrust of people, sudden flight or defence reactions and a strong hunting or guarding instinct can be typical. Some strays are remarkably social with other dogs but shy with people, others tend to show a territorial protective drive.

After moving in, a clear, calm routine, short training sessions, positive reinforcement and a safe retreat in the house help most. If you are unsure, get support from a dog trainer with experience with traumatised dogs.

RELAXEDWellbeing

Loose body posture, soft eyes and normal panting.

STRESSEDStress signals

Fixed stares, growling or stiffening.

Health and preventive care

Five topics come up particularly often: parasites such as fleas and worms, skin problems, under- or malnutrition, fearful behaviour and unexplained infections. So have your new dog checked by the vet right away.

At the first vet visit

If your dog is anxious or injured, let the practice know in advance. Some animals need a little sedation or special handling tips. With our dog Flicky, after consulting the vet, we went into the waiting room again and again during the first weeks, without any treatment at all. That way she quickly got used to the rooms and noises and is very relaxed at the vet today.

Rabies vaccination

Rabies is fatal for humans and animals, which is why many countries require valid vaccination protection for travel and admission. A first vaccination usually counts from 21 to 28 days after it is given, and boosters follow every one to three years depending on the vaccine. Note the vaccination date, manufacturer and batch number in the pet passport if your vet has not done so yet. If the history is uncertain, it is better to have the vaccination repeated when in doubt.

EU pet passport and documentation

The blue EU pet passport is the central document for travel within the EU. It contains the microchip, rabies vaccination and, where applicable, tapeworm treatments before entry. Have your dog microchipped if this has not already been done, and check that the chip number and data match. Keep the booklet safe and also scan it.

Also create a folder with invoices, findings and photos. You can find the full requirements at the German Federal Chamber of Veterinarians (in German).

Preparing your home and settling in

Make your home safe before your dog moves in: non-toxic plants, closed bins and sturdy fences are a must. The first weeks are mainly about routine. Set up feeding, sleeping and walking times as consistently as possible, so your dog quickly understands what is “normal” in your home.

  1. 1Lead safelyHarness plus lead, and a second safety lead if needed. This prevents escape attempts and makes you look confident.
  2. 2Reward calmlyReward calm behaviour with small treats or praise. Punishment for fear is off limits, it makes everything worse.
  3. 3Sit out the fearIf your dog freezes, wait calmly, walk a few steps ahead and gently lead him on.
  4. 4Train briefly5 to 10 minutes on a walk: basic commands, recall and “heel” in a calm environment.
  5. 5Practise being aloneIncrease slowly so that no separation anxiety develops.
  6. 6ObserveNote what he eats, what his stool looks like and how he sleeps. This helps the vet enormously.

On behalf of all street dogs: please do not expect miracles overnight. Small successes build trust faster than any forced confrontation.

Recognising a reputable rescue

Animal welfare associations and shelters are your most important contacts. Reputable organisations check the origin, document the vaccination status, advise on settling in and often offer aftercare and training help. Many require a home check: when we adopted Flicky, a lady visited us and looked at the flat and the surroundings. Reputable animal welfare workers simply want their charges to be well in the long term.

Illegal rescues may save you the adoption fee, but they often provide no papers or health guarantees. Avoid rescuers without a fixed address, without checking processes or with cash transfers abroad. Insist on written information about the dog’s history and on a trial period or return policy.

Quick checklist before adopting

Ideally, support associations that run neutering and vaccination campaigns in the countries of origin. That way you help reduce animal suffering on the streets. These animal welfare workers usually work closely with local vets and know the regional disease risks.

Responsibility in everyday life

After the handover, you are responsible for vaccinations, deworming and often also neutering. Make a vet appointment soon and complete the pet passport. In everyday life, responsibility means: routine, slow socialisation, patient training and suitable nutrition. A street dog can be anxious or traumatised; you need time, love and sometimes professional help.

The shelter knows your dog’s history best. Ask about behaviour notes, food recommendations and stress triggers and stay in touch for questions. The animal welfare association often connects you with training groups or experienced adopters, and walking together helps your dog learn social signals.

Budget for food, vet, liability insurance and unexpected treatments. What awaits you in the first year is calculated by our free cost calculator, and for the starter equipment it is worth taking a look at our discounts. How switching the diet actually works, we tell you in Flicky’s story.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take a street dog to settle in?

It varies from dog to dog, expect weeks to months. The 3-3-3 rule is a good guide: 3 days to arrive, 3 weeks to open up, 3 months until he really feels at home.

Does my street dog need a vet right away?

Yes, ideally as soon as possible after arrival, even if he seems healthy. Parasites, infections or deficiencies are not always visible at first glance.

How do I recognise a reputable rescue organisation?

By transparency: adoption contract, complete health records, EU pet passport, return policy and a contact person who remains available even after the adoption.

The two manufacturers at a glance

GranataPet: premium from the Allgäu

GranataPet belongs to Fox4Pets GmbH & Co. KG, based in Dietmannsried in the Allgäu region. Its trademark is pomegranate seeds in the recipes, which according to the manufacturer are meant to provide natural antioxidants. According to the shop, all product lines are made exclusively in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The range includes wet and dry food, snacks and oils for dogs, plus food for cats. How the manufacturer got started and how the food performs in everyday life is covered in our GranataPet review. Here we only look at the comparison.

bosch Tiernahrung: family business since 1960

bosch is a family run manufacturer from Blaufelden-Wiesenbach in Baden-Württemberg and, according to its own information, has been producing food for dogs and cats since 1960. The manufacturer highlights regional raw materials, climate neutral production since 2020 and sugar-free recipes.

Unlike many brands, bosch sells direct from the manufacturer in its own online shop. Within Germany, shipping is free from an order value of €49.

Range compared

Both brands sell dog and cat food. The difference lies in the breadth.

FOCUSEDGranataPet

Wet and dry food in a few clearly defined lines: Liebling’s Mahlzeit, Natural Taste, Mini Royal for small dogs and the single protein line PUR. According to the shop, free from grain and sugar throughout.

BROADbosch Tiernahrung

According to the shop, 14 dog food brands and lines, including HPC, Heimat, Soft/Plus, Bio, Oven Baked, Vegan and Insect. From classic recipes to grain-free single protein varieties.

GranataPet has a smaller selection, but the same approach applies almost across the board: grain-free, high meat content, pomegranate seeds. bosch gives you more choice, but you have to look more closely at which line you buy, because not every recipe is grain-free. That is neither good nor bad, it is a question of what you are looking for.

Ingredients and labelling

GranataPet advertises all its wet food varieties as “without sugar and grain” and with meat made up exclusively of muscle meat and high quality offal. The shop does not give the exact meat content for every variety. Tests mention a meat content of about 60 to 65 percent for some wet food varieties, with details in our individual review.

With bosch, it is worth looking at the individual line. The site offers filters for grain-free, gluten-free, without maize, without wheat and without potatoes, which shows how broad the range is meant to be. At the same time, bosch sells classic recipes with grain: a test on hundeo.com, for example, rates HPC Adult Lamm & Reis (lamb and rice) at 2.8 out of 5 points and points out rice, barley, millet and maize. That is no problem for many dogs, but it does not suit anyone who specifically wants to feed grain-free.

Single protein and allergy lines

If your dog reacts to certain proteins, single protein recipes are the starting point for an elimination diet. GranataPet’s Liebling’s Mahlzeit PUR line offers single protein wet food in beef, poultry, game and horse, and in dry food there are, for example, Natural Taste Pferd Mono and Mini Royal Pferd Mono (horse) as well as the Sensitive varieties with duck and fish.

At bosch, the single protein filter in the shop shows 35 products, including Soft Sensitive Pferd & Tapioka (horse and tapioca), Soft Adult Forelle & Kartoffel (trout and potato), Soft Adult Strauß & Tapioka (ostrich and tapioca) and Heimat wet food with Landrind (beef) for sensitive dogs.

So both brands offer real allergy options, bosch with more protein sources thanks to its breadth, GranataPet with a clearly recognisable PUR line. How an elimination diet works is explained in our guide to dog food allergies and protein sources. If you suspect an allergy, please talk to your vet first.

What does the food cost per day? A worked example

As an example, we take an adult, normally active, unneutered dog weighing 15 kilograms. The pet food calculator works out around 854 kilocalories a day for this dog. With an average of 375 kilocalories per 100 grams of dry food, that is about 228 grams, and with an average of 100 kilocalories per 100 grams of wet food, around 854 grams. The exact amount depends on the kcal value on the pack, and a neutered dog also needs about 20 percent less.

FoodPrice per kgapprox. cost per day
GranataPet Natural Taste, 12 kg€6.25€1.43
GranataPet Natural Taste, 4 kg€8.75€2.00
bosch Adult Pferd & Süßkartoffel (horse and sweet potato)from €6.19€1.41
bosch Meat Menue Pute & Huhn (turkey and chicken)from €9.36€2.13
GranataPet Liebling’s Mahlzeit, 800 g wet food€5.36€4.58
bosch Heimat wet food Landrind (beef)from €7.23€6.17

The prices come from the shops, as of 7 October 2026, each without discount. For dry food, both brands are in a similar range, depending on pack size and variety. Feeding only wet food is much more expensive for a 15 kilo dog, which is why many owners feed a mix, meaning some wet food with the dry food. With a 15 percent code the costs drop accordingly, for example for GranataPet Natural Taste in the 12 kilo pack to about €1.21 per day.

Conclusion: which dog suits which brand?

GranataPet is a good fit for dogs and owners looking for a manageable, consistently grain-free range with clearly recognisable single protein varieties who are willing to pay premium prices for it. For small breeds there is even a dedicated line with Mini Royal.

bosch is a good fit for dogs and owners who value choice and different price levels: from classic recipes to single protein varieties, direct from the manufacturer, with free shipping from €49. If you want to feed grain-free, use the filter in the shop.

Both are a good choice, but for different dogs. If in doubt, start with a small pack, switch over slowly and watch stools, skin and appetite before you buy bigger packs. And if your dog happily empties both bowls while trying them and then still sits expectantly next to the food cupboard, that is not a question of the brand, but one of persistence.

The short answer

GranataPet offers high-quality wet and dry food with a high meat content, transparent recipes and special varieties for sensitive animals. The wet food in particular does well in tests.

  • Wet food with about 60 to 65 % meat content in some varieties
  • Many varieties grain-free and without added sugar
  • Pomegranate seeds and green-lipped mussel as a special feature
  • Produced in Germany and Austria, brand from the Allgäu region

Have you ever wondered whether premium food from the Allgäu really lives up to what the packaging promises? Or whether it is just good marketing? When I tried GranataPet for the first time, my picky gourmet Flicky promptly tested three bowls: two licked clean, one left as if freshly washed. A good sign and the start of this review.

Here you will learn where the brand’s strengths lie, which varieties are particularly worthwhile, what to look out for in the declaration and ingredients, and which dogs and cats GranataPet suits best.

60 to 65 %meat content in some wet food varieties
70 to 80 %moisture in the wet food
2production countries: Germany and Austria

GranataPet at a glance

GranataPet comes from the Allgäu region and focuses on natural ingredients, grain-free recipes and a close link between product development and real pets. The driving force is Markus Fuchsenthaler. His work began with an allergic dog and the wish for food that is better tolerated. According to the brand, the recipes were tested with their own dogs, not in animal experiments.

Production takes place in Germany and Austria, which keeps supply chains short and makes quality control easier. The brand emphasises regional raw materials and does without sugar and soy in many recipes. You can buy the food in pet shops, in online shops or directly in the GranataPet online shop.

In the premium segment, GranataPet stands out with grain-free ingredient lists, additives such as green-lipped mussel and a focus on food-grade quality. Many discount or supermarket brands, on the other hand, rely more on grain as a filler.

Range and special features

The focus is on high-quality wet food, complemented by dry food and snacks. Product sizes range from sample portions to trial packs, so you can check how well it is tolerated before buying larger packs.

WET FOODMany varieties

Mostly complete food, with chicken, lamb or fish. The DeliCatessen line has a particularly high meat content and is often grain-free.

DRY FOODFresh meat plus oils

High fresh meat content, grain-free, with salmon, linseed and safflower oil.

SNACKSRewards

Mostly without sugar and with a manageable list of ingredients.

SPECIAL FEATUREPomegranate and green-lipped mussel

Pomegranate seeds provide antioxidants, green-lipped mussel is said to support the joints.

The pomegranate seeds are above all a brand trademark. They do not replace the main protein source and are aimed more at image and mild functional effects than at large amounts of nutrients. Green-lipped mussel provides natural substances similar to glucosamine and chondroitin and can be useful for older dogs or dogs with sensitive joints. The brand largely avoids artificial colourings and flavourings.

Wet food: meat content and varieties

In tests, some varieties come in at about 60 to 65 percent meat. The recipes often mix fresh meat with meat meal or dried meat, and there are variants with chicken, beef, pheasant and game. A high percentage alone does not tell the whole story, though: offal provides vitamins, bone meal provides calcium, and the exact type of meat is decisive for allergies.

GranataPet usually declares openly, so the animal ingredients are clearly stated on the pack. With 70 to 80 percent moisture, the wet food ensures a good water intake, especially for dogs who do not drink much. Omega-3 oils and green-lipped mussel are often listed too.

The Liebling’s Mahlzeit variety, for example, is available as pheasant & poultry or chicken & parsnips, and tests named it test winner several times. The pheasant variant has about 60 to 65 percent meat and contains no grain or sugar, while beef variants with a stronger flavour suit active dogs with high protein needs.

For puppies there are junior and puppy recipes with more energy, an adjusted calcium to phosphorus ratio and more easily digestible meat sources. If your puppy shows allergies, choose a variety with a clear declaration and without unnecessary fillers.

Dry food: fresh meat and oils

Many dry food varieties contain a significant amount of fresh muscle meat, often listed separately on the declaration from meat meal as a concentrated protein source. A high fresh meat content plus additional meat meal usually means more real meat per portion.

The Natural Taste poultry variety relies on chicken or turkey, is grain-free and contains no fillers. Other main varieties are game & buffalo, beef as well as junior and senior formulas. Look at protein content, fat and crude ash, which say a lot about energy and digestibility.

OMEGA-3Salmon oil

Provides EPA and DHA for skin, coat and against inflammation, important for older or active dogs.

OMEGA-3Linseed oil

Plant-based omega-3 fatty acid ALA, good for gut health.

OMEGA-6Safflower oil

Linoleic acid for skin and coat.

Declaration and comparison

For many varieties, GranataPet states meat content in percent as well as broth or moisture content, and some show fresh meat separately from dried meat meal. For some products, however, the exact type of poultry is missing, which can be relevant for sensitive dogs. Pay particular attention to terms such as “meat meal” or “muscle meat”, as this makes a difference in digestibility and quality.

Compared to Anifit, GranataPet stands out with a very clear declaration. Anifit relies more on raw ingredients and short ingredient lists, GranataPet more often on functional additives. If you need maximum transparency for every protein source, take a look at the PUR line, where the information is often more specific.

If your dog has special allergies or stomach problems, talk to your vet before changing food.

Experiences, price and discount code

Several test reports rate GranataPet positively, especially the wet food, which often does better than many dry food brands. Many owners report that even picky dogs accept the food, small and large breeds alike. The kibbles come in different shapes to suit different snouts. Dogs with sensitive stomachs often tolerate the sugar-free and grain-free recipes better.

Seniors benefit from recipes with green-lipped mussel, and there are separate variants for puppies; check that they are labelled as complete food. For Flicky, by the way, we use a mix of wet and dry food.

Our code for you: with FLICKY15 you get 15 % off your next order at GranataPet.

Value for money depends on the line and format. Wet food often offers better ingredients per euro, but costs more per portion than cheap dry food. The current codes from our GranataPet coupon page:

Frequently asked questions

How good is the quality of the ingredients?

GranataPet mostly uses clearly named meat sources such as poultry or pheasant and often states percentages. The brand emphasises regional production, but that does not replace independent quality testing.

Which varieties are suitable for allergies?

Grain-free recipes and varieties with only one animal protein source, for example without beef or without gluten. Look for short ingredient lists, introduce new food gradually and watch skin, coat and stool.

How well is GranataPet tolerated in everyday life?

Many report a good coat and stable digestion, especially with varieties high in meat and without grain. Expect about a week to adjust. If there is diarrhoea, vomiting or skin problems, talk to your vet.

Are there varieties without grain or sugar?

Yes. Grain-free varieties are usually labelled as such. You can recognise sugar by dextrose, syrup or malt extract; at GranataPet it rarely appears in the declaration.

Wet food or dry food?

Dry food keeps longer and can help with dental abrasion. Wet food has more meat and moisture. Mixed feeding can be ideal, and that is what we do with Flicky too.

Are there products for puppies and seniors?

Yes. Puppy food has more energy and protein for growth, senior variants are easier to digest and contain additives for the joints. Choose according to age, activity and health.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find currently valid dog food discount codes?

On our shop overview you will find all dog food brands in one place, checked daily and with a direct link to the shop. The 16 brands above are a curated selection.

Which discount code is most worthwhile for me?

That depends on the type of food. For premium dry food, GranataPet and Purina Pro Plan are worth it, for fresh food on subscription Fred & Felia or Butternut Box, and for BARF haustierkost.de.

How much does dog food cost per month?

Depending on the size of your dog and the type of food, usually between €30 and €150 a month. With a discount code you save noticeably on that, especially in the first months after switching.

Can I use several discount codes at the same time?

As a rule, only one code applies per order. Some shops have exceptions such as additional newsletter discounts, which is then stated on the respective coupon page.

Do the discount codes also apply to cat food?

Some brands such as GranataPet, Purina Pro Plan, Mera, Fred & Felia and WOW Pet also offer cat food, and the code usually works the same way there. If in doubt, check the coupon page.

How often are the discount codes updated?

We check the codes daily so you can rely on valid offers. It is best to drop by regularly, especially for time-limited promotions.

The short answer

Increased itching in dogs is often caused by a food allergy or intolerance. The right protein source can relieve symptoms or avoid them completely if you go about it systematically.

  • Most common triggers: beef, chicken and dairy products
  • Well-tolerated alternatives: horse, insect, fish, game or lamb
  • Elimination diet with one new protein source over several weeks
  • Blood tests are often unreliable, the vet helps with the diagnosis

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and wondered whether your dog’s scratching really comes from the coat or from something else? Many dogs first show small signals such as itching, diarrhoea or bald patches. And you need clear answers, not guesswork.

I will show you which proteins often cause problems, which ones can work well and how to test step by step what really does your dog good. For serious health questions, please always talk to your vet.

6 to 12 weekselimination diet, usually 8 weeks recommended
Beef, chicken, dairymost common triggers
Horse, insect, fishwell-tolerated alternatives

Recognising a food allergy or intolerance

Food reactions usually show up on the skin and in digestion. Combinations of skin and gut problems are particularly suspicious.

Only the vet can rule out other causes. The diagnosis is usually made through an elimination trial with a special diet or hydrolysed food; blood tests are often unreliable.

IMMUNE SYSTEMAllergy

The body recognises certain proteins such as beef or chicken as an enemy and reacts with itching, inflammation or gastrointestinal problems. Often only develops after months or years on the same food.

DIGESTIONIntolerance

No immune reaction, but digestive problems, enzyme deficiency or irritation caused by certain ingredients. Soft stool and flatulence are more common, but itching is still possible.

Why proteins trigger allergies

The immune system recognises proteins as foreign substances when their structure is unknown or too similar to allergens. If the same protein source is fed again and again, the risk of sensitisation increases. Antibodies then form, which trigger inflammation on renewed contact, visible as itchy skin, ear infections or chronic diarrhoea.

Digestibility also plays a role: poorly digested proteins arrive incompletely in the gut and irritate the immune system. Common triggers are beef, chicken and dairy products, because many dogs have been given them for a long time and often. Wheat, maize and soy can also cause problems. Then there are hidden sources such as “animal by-products”, cross-contamination in ready-made food and storage mites in dry food.

Well-tolerated protein sources

Horse, rabbit and lamb are classic alternative proteins because they rarely appear in standard food. Many brands offer single-protein recipes with exactly one type of meat, which makes elimination diets easier. Advantage: fewer cross-reactions with beef or chicken. Disadvantage: they are more expensive, and some dogs refuse the unfamiliar taste. Fresh muscle meat is better than cheap slaughter leftovers; watch itching, coat and stool for at least 8 weeks.

Game, duck and fish are also good alternatives. Game has a different protein structure than farmed meat, duck is rich in omega fats, and fish provides easily digestible protein plus omega-3. With fish, pay attention to mercury and sustainability; oily fish can cause diarrhoea, so switch slowly. Duck is not always accepted straight away. Choose single-protein food without additional animal proteins and check for hidden additives such as soy or milk powder.

Alternative protein sources

Insect protein, for example from mealworms, provides a lot of protein with little need for space and water and often contains fewer known allergens than chicken or beef. As the only protein, it keeps the ingredient list short. Look for certificates and a clear declaration, test in small amounts and remain cautious with dogs that have multiple allergies, as allergy tests for insects are rare.

Hydrolysed proteins are broken down into small peptides so that the immune system does not recognise them as foreign. Hypoallergenic foods prescribed by vets often use this. Not all products are the same; some still contain unchanged or several proteins. In the case of severe allergy, only after consulting the vet.

Plant proteins such as pea, sweet lupin, lentils or soy can be an alternative, but often have a lower biological value. Some dogs also develop intolerances to them. Vegan food is demanding: pay attention to amino acids, vitamin B12 and minerals and only use fully formulated complete food. Discuss this route with your vet beforehand.

Which type of food suits allergies?

WETSingle-protein wet food

Often fewer additives, moister and good for sensitive stomachs. Easy to portion, ingredient lists usually clearer.

DRYSingle-protein dry food

Practical and keeps for a long time. Look for clearly declared recipes without hidden by-products.

BARFFull control

You decide every piece of meat and vegetable. Requires hygiene, balanced nutrients and the right calcium to phosphorus ratio.

GRAIN-FREENot automatically hypoallergenic

Only helps if your dog demonstrably reacts to wheat, maize or soy. Substitutes such as potato or pea can also irritate.

In an elimination diet, a clear protein source is more important than “grain-free”. Suitable carbohydrates for allergic dogs are sweet potato, pumpkin, courgette or rice; avoid maize and soy. If carbohydrates are near the top of the ingredient list, they dominate the recipe. With BARF (raw feeding), get help from your vet or a nutrition consultant at the beginning.

The elimination diet step by step

With an elimination diet you find out which protein source causes problems for your dog. For very sensitive dogs, switch slowly over 5 to 7 days.

  1. 1Choose a new protein sourceA single-protein meal that your dog has never had before, such as horse, kangaroo or duck.
  2. 2One carbohydrate sourcePlus only one source such as potato or millet.
  3. 3Feed nothing elseNo treats, no tablets with fillers, not a single bite from the table.
  4. 4Take notes dailyRecord itching, diarrhoea, vomiting and skin changes, plus previous foods and medication.
  5. 5EvaluateIf symptoms improve within about 8 weeks, the source is probably tolerated. Then reintroduce old ingredients one at a time.

If anything gets worse, stop the diet. In case of severe itching, hair loss or persistent vomiting, go to the vet immediately.

More tips for allergic dogs

Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) help reduce inflammation in skin and joints. Good sources are fish oil from salmon or sardines, or algae oil if your dog does not tolerate fish. Dose according to weight and the manufacturer’s instructions; too much can promote diarrhoea or a tendency to bleed. Molecularly distilled fish oil reduces pollutants. If your dog has clotting disorders or is on medication, ask the vet first.

Snacks for allergic dogs

How much food your dog needs is calculated in seconds by our pet food calculator, whether for dry, wet or raw feeding. You can find even more helpers, from dog age to starter equipment costs, among all our calculators.

Frequently asked questions

Allergy or intolerance, how can I tell the difference?

Allergies often show itching, skin redness and ear infections; they are immune-related and can appear suddenly. Intolerances tend to show as flatulence or soft stool shortly after eating. If in doubt, ask the vet.

Which proteins are well tolerated by allergic dogs?

Horse, game and lamb, because dogs rarely come across them. Duck and fish are good alternatives to beef and chicken. Insect protein has a low allergy potential; we like BugBell, for example.

Which proteins most often trigger allergies?

Beef and chicken, because many ready-made foods contain them and dogs become sensitised over years. Dairy products and soy are also common triggers. Grain itself is less often to blame.

Does insect protein make sense for sensitive dogs?

Yes, it has a low allergy potential and is highly digestible. Look for a clear declaration and only one protein source if you use it as a test food.

How long does an elimination diet take?

You feed only one new protein and one carbohydrate source. Expect 6 to 12 weeks, usually 8 weeks are recommended so that skin and digestion can settle. Then reintroduce old ingredients one at a time.

How can I tell that a new food is helping?

Less itching, cleaner ears, better stool and a shiny coat. Small changes after 2 to 4 weeks are a good sign. If there is no improvement after 12 weeks at the latest, go to the vet.

The short answer

Butternut Box is freshly cooked dog food made with human-grade ingredients, individually portioned and delivered frozen. It’s a great fit for picky eaters, sensitive stomachs and anyone who wants fresh food without cooking.

  • 11 recipes, from game to veggie
  • From €2.61 per day in Germany, according to the provider
  • No minimum term, pause or cancel anytime
  • You’ll need freezer space

Fresh food delivered by subscription, for dogs. Just like for humans, except the recipient has four paws and no idea what a subscription even is. When the first Butternut Box arrived, Flicky sniffed the packaging, glanced at me for a second, then inhaled the first portion like it was the most normal thing in the world. Skeptical as always about anything with a glossy website and a heart logo, I took a closer look anyway.

In this review you’ll find out what’s in the recipes, how much it costs, how ordering and delivery work, whether you can order without a subscription and how to cancel. All facts were checked on the Butternut Box website and help centre for Germany in September 2026.

What is Butternut Box?

Butternut Box cooks dog food from human-grade ingredients, portions it for your dog, freezes it and delivers it to your door. Instead of a big can or a bag of kibble, you get individual fresh pouches, usually one per dog per day. Butternut works out the amount from a short questionnaire about your dog’s weight, age, activity level and body shape.

The difference to classic wet food: the meals are gently cooked and frozen straight away instead of being preserved in cans. You can see that in the bowl, the meat, vegetables and pulses still look like what they are. For dog noses, that’s clearly a selling point.

The recipes

Butternut Box currently offers 11 recipes, “from game to veggie” as they put it: meals with beef, chicken, fish such as salmon and white fish, game and even a vegetarian option. Each recipe combines the protein with vegetables and other ingredients and is a complete, balanced meal. You choose which recipes go into your box and can change them anytime.

There’s also a small extras range: Golden Oaties, oat biscuits made with just five ingredients, Daily Dental chews for oral care, and supplements. Handy, but definitely not a must.

Ordering, delivery and switching food

  1. 1Fill in the questionnaireEnter your dog’s name, weight, age, activity and body shape. Butternut calculates the energy needs and suggests portions and recipes, and you see the price before committing.
  2. 2Get the starter boxMeals for 7 or 14 days, most dogs get 14. It can’t be cancelled once it’s paid.
  3. 3Subscription startsAfter that you choose boxes for 21 or 28 days and a delivery interval between 7 and 56 days.
  4. 4Freeze and thawThe box arrives frozen with ice packs. Pouches go straight into the freezer, and you thaw the next day’s pouch in the fridge.
  5. 5Switch graduallyMix a small amount into the usual food and increase it over about 7 to 10 days.

According to Butternut, a thawed, unopened pouch keeps in the fridge for up to a week, an opened one should be used within two days. If a box arrives partly thawed, that’s fine as long as the pouches still feel cold. Plan for some freezer space, especially with big dogs and big boxes.

During the switch, watch stool, appetite and energy. Slightly softer stool in the first days is normal, just slow down. In case of vomiting, persistent diarrhoea or a very sensitive stomach, ask your vet before and during the switch.

How much does Butternut Box cost?

According to Butternut, prices in Germany start at €2.61 per day. For a small, calm dog that’s around €80 a month. The bigger and more active your dog, the higher the price, because every box is calculated from daily energy needs. The price calculator on the Butternut website shows the exact amount without signing up. Butternut adjusted its prices on 16 April 2026, so older prices you find online are often too low.

Larger boxes are more cost-effective according to Butternut, because packaging and shipping weigh less per day. If your freezer allows it, the 28-day box is the most economical choice. With the code FLICKY you get 40% off your first two boxes, and the code has no expiry date. Example: for a small dog, the 14-day starter box costs around €36.50 at €2.61 per day. With 40% off you save around €14.60 and pay only around €21.90, more for bigger dogs. The code only applies to active subscriptions, so if you cancel right after the first delivery, it won’t apply to the next box. Current codes from our Butternut Box coupon page:

Ordering without a subscription and cancelling

New customers always start with the starter box, and the subscription then starts automatically. After that, there’s an official way that feels almost like no subscription: once you’ve cancelled, you can order a one-off box in your account at any time, under “Einmalige Box bestellen”. Boxes are packed in steps of 7 pouches, with 7 as the minimum for most sizes and 14 for the smallest portion sizes. A one-off box does not reactivate your subscription.

There’s no minimum term, and pausing, changing or cancelling is free. To cancel, log in, click your profile icon, open “Kontodetails” and scroll down to the red “Abonnement kündigen” button, then answer a short survey and confirm. If a payment is outstanding, cancelling only works once it’s settled. The exact steps are in the official help article on cancelling (in German).
